Añadir al carritoHardcover (Original Cloth). Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Edition Unstated. From the Dust Jacket: "Designed as a supplement for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on animal learning, learning theory, and mathematical psychology, this monograph presents the first precise treatment of discrimination learning in book form. The volume discusses a wide variety of questions which must be answered in the course of formulating a precise quantitative model. After a large number of experimental results are introduced for each question and their implications for theory considered in detail, a 'best guess' is made about what assumptions should be made in a theory. In the final part of the monograph, these 'best guesses' are integrated into a formal model for discrimination learning, and the behaviour produced by this model is compared with that of real animals." Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket is fully intact, no tears or chips, but carries signs of wear to top and bottom edges, corners etc. Dust Jacket un-clipped. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Añadir al carritoNo Binding. Glazed ceramic blue transfer plate commemorating abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy, following his murder in Alton, Illinois, in November 1837. With "Lovejoy: The First Martyr to American Liberty at Alton Nov. 7 1837" with design of female Liberty pointing to a printing press alongside a kneeling enslaved man along the top of the rim; "We hold that all men are created equal" to left; "Of one blood are all nations of men" to right; and the full text of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution at center. Measures 10.5" in diameter. The first of the memorial plates dedicated to Lovejoy and the First Amendment were produced in Staffordshire, England, circa 1840 as part of a series referred to as Constitutional Ware, though it's uncertain whether they were produced directly for market or for donation and fundraising for the abolitionist movement in the United States. There were at least three separate designs for the portion at the top of the rim, with the rest of the text and images remaining the same. These designs appeared on jugs, printed ribbons, and a variety of different sizes of plate, though it is uncertain if all these came from the same Staffordshire source, or if some were produced later, possibly to commemorate the construction of the Elijah Lovejoy Monument in Alton in 1897. Large plates with lighter blues such as this one are considered to be among those produced after the first 4" Staffordshire cup plates, but estimates for date of production for these larger plates varies wildly, ranging from ca. 1840 to ca. 1900.…

Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. Tanner, Henry. The Martyrdom of Lovejoy, 1881, documents the violent suppression of abolitionist print culture through an eyewitness account of Rev. Elijah P. Lovejoy's final campaign to publish antislavery material in Alton, Illinois. Lovejoy, a Presbyterian minister, newspaper editor, and abolitionist, was killed on November 7, 1837, while defending his printing press from a pro-slavery mob, an event that made him a central martyr of American abolitionism and freedom of the press. The book reveals how antislavery publishing operated under direct physical threat, showing the mechanisms by which pro-slavery violence attempted to silence abolitionist journalism and providing primary-source evidence for research into antebellum reform, religious antislavery activism, mob violence, and press freedom. Tanner, Henry. The Martyrdom of Lovejoy: An Account of the Life, Trials, and Perils of Rev. Elijah P. Lovejoy. Chicago: Fergus Printing Company, 1881. Inscribed by the Fergus Printing Company to William F. Poole, Esq., January 1881. First edition. 174 pages. Frontispiece silhouette of Lovejoy reproduced from an original owned by his niece, Mrs. W.M.R. French of Chicago. Original brown cloth with paper spine labels, no jacket as issued, 8vo. Authorship is credited on the title page to an "Eye-Witness," identified bibliographically as Henry Tanner, 1813-1895. The narrative traces Lovejoy's ministerial commitments, antislavery editorial work, repeated confrontations over his press, escalating threats in Alton, and the final attack in which he was shot while resisting destruction of abolitionist printing equipment. Issued more than four decades after Lovejoy's death, the volume belongs to the postbellum memorialization of antebellum abolitionism, when eyewitness testimony and commemorative biography helped define Lovejoy's place in the history of slavery, reform, and civil liberties. The publisher's presentation inscription to William F. Poole, a major American librarian and historian, adds a meaningful institutional association to a book already centered on print, memory, and public history. Binding worn with chipping and fraying to spine, loss to spine labels, cracked but holding hinges, and light foxing; text clean and legible; good. A substantial eyewitness-based account of abolitionist publishing under mob attack, with strong research value for the study of antislavery print culture and the politics of free expression before the Civil War. Signed.…

Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. (LOVEJOY, Elijah P.) LOVEJOY, Joseph C. and Owen. Memoir of the Rev. Elijah P. Lovejoy; Who Was Murdered in Defence of the Liberty of the Press, At Alton, Illinois, Nov. 7, 1837. With an Introduction by John Quincy Adams. New York: John S. Taylor, 1838. Octavo, original blindstamped gray cloth. $3200.First edition of the publisher and editor's memoir, issued the year after his murderÑkilled by "five bullets in his heart, while defending his fourth press from an armed, arsonist mob"Ñonly two years after he denounced the lynching by fire of a free black man, as an act of "savage barbarity," with introduction by John Quincy Adams, a seminal record of a key event in America's abolitionist battle and the history of the First Amendment.Elijah Lovejoy, who was born in Maine, began publishing the abolitionist Observer after he moved to St. Louis. When, in 1836, a mob dragged Francis McIntosh, a free black man accused of murder, from the St. Louis jail and set him on fire, killing him, "Lovejoy's Observer described the lynching by fire as an 'awful murder and savage barbarity'É [and] attacked Judge Luke Lawless" (St. Louis Post-Dispatch). Lawless, who presided over the grand jury investigating the lynching of McIntosh, had "declared that such actions by 'the manyÑof the multitudeÉ is beyond the reach of human law!'É[and] made it clear that he blamed abolitionist agitatorsÉ With this judicial encouragement, vandals entered the Observer office on three or four occasionsÉ Prophetically, Lovejoy pointed out that Lawless' reasoning would allow a mob to destroy the Observer, kill its editor, and escape punishment'" (Kielbowicz, "Law and Mob Law," in Law and History Review V.24, 587-88). After mobs destroyed his shop a third time, "Lovejoy moved the Observer to nearby Alton, Illinois, only to see the violence against him and his press escalateÉ he died, five bullets in his heart, while defending his fourth press from an armed, arsonist mobÉ Lovejoy's murder marked a turning point in Northern attitudes regarding the antislavery movement's print tactics; no longer perceived as a dangerous criminal act, abolitionist print agitation was for the most part toleratedÑhowever grudginglyÑas a recognized form of free speech appropriate to a healthy democracyÉ that the editor's murder, like that of McIntosh, was followed by highly suspicious judicial pandering to the Slave Power only reinforced abolitionist efforts to associate antislavery with both freedom of expression and trial by jury" (DeLombard, Slavery on Trial, 57).When verdicts were handed down in the Alton case, both the abolitionists who tried to defend Lovejoy's press, and the members of the mob who attacked it, were acquitted or had their cases dropped. "Within days of the Alton verdicts, Abraham Lincoln, then a young attorney in Springfield, lamented the 'mobocratic spiritÉ now abroad in the land.' In a prophetic speech, Lincoln identified the 'growing disposition to substitute the wild and furious passions, in lieu of the sober judgment of the Courts' as the principal threat to the survival of American political institutions" and, in a reference to Lovejoy, he also spoke harshly of those who "throw printing presses into rivers, [and] shoot editors.'" Scholar Michael Kent Curtis has credited "abolitionists' free-speech efforts with breathing meaning into abstract notions of freedom of expression and laying the foundation for First and 14th Amendment doctrines that matured in the 20th century." There remains, nevertheless, a key aspect of the debate over free speech that endorses "the view that communities should have some control over ideas disseminated in their midst," supported as a form of nuisance law. "Not until 1931 did the U.S. Supreme Court, in Near v. Minnesota, rule out the use of public nuisance as a basis for silencing a publication that agitated a community. Coincidentally or not, this also marked the Court's first application of the 14th Amendment to strike down state restric.…
