Some discolouration and surface marking to the boards with rubbing and bumping to the corners. The page edges are browned. London County Council stamp the front pastedown and the endpapers are browned. Small red ink stain at the bottom corners of the front pastedown and the first two pages. One inch closed tear to the top edge of the title page, one inch closed tear to the top edge of page 19, small tear to the bottom edge of page 21 and there are three inch long tears to the edges of page 45. Light marking in a few places and the pages are a little browned but otherwise generally unmarked. No jacket. Illustrated with a number of paintings - a number of these are colour plates. First printing.

Ex-library withdrawn from Iowa State University, Des Moines. xiii, dedication, 359pp. Numerous b&w illustrations. Dark navy cloth covered boards with gilt-stamped border around edges of front panel and at head and tail of board spine; gilt stamped lettering front panel and spine. Upper external page edges are gilt. Edges at head and tail of board spine are split and chipped. The upper 4" along the front spine fold is split and fraying but holding; several small splits along the back spine fold as well as rubs. Base of spine has white smudge, likely where the ex-lib marks were. All fore-edge corner tips are rubbed through. Withdrawn bookplate on front paste down. Inside front gutter is partially cracked but holding. Small penciled notes on FFEP. Ex-lib marks on title page, page v. of preface, possibly others. Text pages are clean and text block is stable.
