Pagination: xli. Publishers blue paper boards bound at spine with yellow thread, as issued. Bound incorrectly? with cover as back, cover with paper label in Chinese characters but spells in English, the title, some minor rust spots/foxing and dampstains to back cover, no affect to inside, and still presents rather well. Uncut Chinese fold leaves, clean text. Eleven full-page illustrations by Phil Little. ?The Heathen Chinee attracted national attention in a manner unintended by Harte, who claimed that its satirical story - about two men, Bill Nye and Ah Sin, trying to cheat each other at cards - showed a form of racial equality. Instead, the poem was taken up by opponents of Chinese immigration. Flushed with success, Harte in 1871 signed with The Atlantic Monthly for $10,000 for 12 stories a year, the highest figure offered to an American writer up to that time.? [-Britannica].

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Phil Little Ilustrador. Limited Edition. Folio. Pp. (41). Introduction by Ina Coolbrith. Bibliography by Robert Cowan. Frontis. illustration of a smiling Chinese man, wearing a hat and an exaggerated pigtail. Illustrated with line drawings and sketches by Phil Little. Bound in traditional Asian style, with japonise double-leaves, sewn with orange cord. Dark blue boards with some slight wear to fore-edges and old creases along lower fore-edge of front cover. Orange slipcase with printed labels on spine and front panel, has slight edge-wear, some wear to tail of spine, and a bumped corner consistent with that on the front cover of book. Written in a style that parodies Swinburne, the overall affect was Swiftian, in that Harte used Chinese stereotypes of his day to mock rampant and violent anti-Chinese sentiment then common on the West Coast. Coolbrith, who worked with Harte on the Overland Monthly, provides a fine introduction to the poem, and its wild success when first published. Alas, many readers of the day didn't understand Harte was mocking their anti-Chinese sentiment.
