'Teriade had always found room for selections from French illuminated manuscripts in Verve's early 'miscellaneous or general issues.' With Verve No. 7, this predilection was in full flood. The Calendar from Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry inaugurated a series devoted exclusively to illuminated texts from the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries. Verve Nos. 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14/15, 16, and 23--which spanned a nine-year period--attest to the importance Teriade attached to this art form.' (Michel Antonioz, VERVE: The Ultimate Review of Art and Literature, 121). In an introductory essay, Teriade himself relays the great difficulty in attempting to reproduce the paintings: 'There are no more exquisite paintings in the world than those contained in this manuscript, and their colors are so delicate that faithful reproduction seemed mpossible by means of mechanical processes using chemical tones . The purit of the manuscript's colors, as Robert Draeger discovered, defied the sensitive emulsions of photographic plates.
