Magazine. Condición: Very Good. (Vol. 48, No. 11). [moderate edgewear to covers, minor deterioration along spine, light discoloration around edges of rear cover]. (B&W and color photographs, ads) Feature articles in this issue include: the cover story, examining "how M-G-M Studios Laboratory and Sound technicians overcame all-bu…t-impossible technical odds to create 'fully dimensional' version" of GWTW for its then-current re-release (which no doubt seemed like an amazing feat at the time, although viewed in a somewhat different light was a desecration); "The Challenges of Filming Commercials for Color TV"; a behind-the-scenes production report on filming puppets for the British TV series THE THUNDERBIRDS; an article about a UCLA film student who got a job filming a kayaking expedition along the coast of Japan; "More Facts About Vidtronics," a color tape-to-film transfer process; "How Cinematography is Used to Monitor the Apollo 4 Moon Shot.

Magazine. Condición: Very Good+. (Vol. 60, No. 6). [light external wear, original subscriber's mailing label on rear cover]. (B&W & color photographs, ads) Monthly magazine of the American Society of Cinematographers, a very technically-oriented publication with plenty of information (articles and advertisements) related to the…latest equipment, technical processes and production techniques then in use in the Hollywood motion picture industry. This issue features an article on the production of Terrence Malick's DAYS OF HEAVEN (written by its d.p., the great Nestor Almendros) and two articles about the Frank Lagella-starring DRACULA (directed by John Badham, shot by Gilbert Taylor). In the "60th Anniversary" theme, there is a historical survey of the ASC and an additonal article about the history of its distinctive Hollywood clubhouse. Finally, there are articles about the shooting of two documentaries: ROCKY MOUNTAIN REUNION, an ABC-TV special starring John Denver, and THE CHESSIE STEAM SPECIAL, a filmed celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. (We have numerous other issues of this and other film-related periodicals that are not listed online; please inquire if you have particular needs or wants.).

Magazine. Condición: Very Good+. (Vol. 59, No. 1). [covers moderately rubbed, a bit of scarring and paper remnants on rear cover (probably from removal of subscriber's mailing label), light soiling to rear cover]. (B&W & color photographs, ads) Monthly magazine of the American Society of Cinematographers, a very technically-orie…nted publication with plenty of information (articles and advertisements) related to the latest equipment, technical processes and production techniques then in use in the Hollywood motion picture industry. Virtually the entirety of this issue is devoted to the production of the film CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, with the magazine's usual "behind the scenes" feature accompanied by articles by cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, production designer Joe Alves, supervising sound editor Frank Warner, producers Julia and Michael Phillips, director Steven Spielberg (writing about the production's "unsung heroes"), visual effects supervisor Douglas Trumbull. There's also a lengthy interview with Spielberg, and all of this material is of course profusely illustrated. One of the more sought-after and collectable issues of A.C. (We have numerous other issues of this and other film-related periodicals that are not listed online; please inquire if you have particular needs or wants.).

Magazine. Condición: Near Fine. (Vol. 51, No. 4). [nice clean copy with minor handling wear, small remnants of removed mailing label at left edge of front cover, one-time owner's name and date stamp at upper right corner of front cover; slight musty odor from long-term storage]. (B&W and color photographs, ads) The cover story,…examining the challenging on-location shooting of the film THE MOLLY MAGUIRES by the great cinematographer James Wong Howe, puts special emphasis on his "radical departure from conventional technique" via the use of quartz "clusters" to replace traditional arc lights. Lighting, in fact, seems to be something of a theme of this issue, as there are two additional articles on aspects of the same subject: one about xenon lighting for location filming, the other an evaluation of quartz vs. other methods of set-lighting.) Also of interest in this issue: "Maintaining the Modern Motion Picture Camera," by a "staff of skilled technicians"; "A Computer You Could Learn to Love," about "an electronic brain that generates images within itself, or does amazing things with an artist's designs" (the emphasis here is on its usefulness for low-budget animation, but it's easy for us to see the seeds of the future in this article); an article discussing (briefly) the five films nominated for that year's Academy Award in Cinematography (ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID; HELLO, DOLLY!; MAROONED; BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE), along with a rather detailed explanation of how the Oscar nominations are detemined; an article about Summit Films, "a company made up of small teams of highly individualistic young film-makers is applying imaginative ideas and techniques to film," mostly of skiing, it seems.

Magazine. Condición: Very Good+. (Vol. 49, No. 3). [modest edgewear to covers, tiny tear and associated horizontal crease at top of front cover, minor scarring and residue on rear cover from removal of mailing label]. (B&W and color photographs) The cover story is "Creating the 'Psychedelic' visual effects for 'THE TRIP'," expla…ining how "translation into cinematic terms of the far-out hallucinations inducted by LSD required skilled application of intricate 'light show' and optical technology." Also in this issue: an article lauding the achievements of ASC Associate Member Kemp R. Niver in re-photographing the Library of Congress paper prints onto 16mm film, using a process of his own devising, for which he was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1955. (Ironically, however, with ever-evolving and improving technology in the world of film preservation, Niver's work eventually came to be regarded as substandard, and in the 1990s the Library of Congress began a project to re-photograph the entire Paper Print Collection onto 35mm film.).

(B&W and color photographs, ads) The dual cover story of this… issue has to do with filming the Vietnam War -- both for real ("As Filmed by U.S. Air Force Cameramen") and for Hollywood ("As Filmed for THE GREEN BERETS"), the latter of course the John Wayne topliner which presented a decidedly hawkish viewpoint on the war. Also in this issue: an article about the filming of the documentary film THE REDWOODS, that year's Academy Award winner; "Recent Trends in Location Lighting"; "Mexico Plans Massive Filming Project for the Olympic Games"; and an article about how the relatively new Super-8 format, "having proved its worth in the professional arena, has spurred a vast tide of new production.".

Magazine. Condición: Near Fine. (Vol. 48, No. 10). [very nice copy, minimal wear, light age-toning at page edges; no subscription label or other markings]. (B&W photographs, ads) Monthly magazine of the American Society of Cinematographers, a very technically-oriented publication with plenty of information (articles and advertis…ements) related to the latest equipment, technical processes and production techniques then in use in the Hollywood motion picture industry. The cover story and primary article is a 4-page piece, illustrated with numerous photographs, about the filming of THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE, directed by Roger Corman and photographed by Milton Krasner -- which was, as the article details, shot not at all in its Chicago settings but entirely on sound stages and street sets at 20th Century-Fox and M-G-M. Perhaps of greater interest in retrospect, however, is the other behind-the-scenes production article, entitled "Out-of-this-world Special Effects for 'Star Trek'," in which their companies' individual contributions to the show are discussed by three of the top special-effects experts in the business -- Howard A. Anderson, Linwood G. Dunn, and Joseph Westheimer -- who "worked separately but in a spirit of cordial collaboration to produce some of the most stunning and literally 'far out' visual effects ever to be recorded on color film.".
