This book examines the life and career of Li Hung-Chang, a pivotal figure in China's late 19th-century history, who served as a minister under four emperors during the Qing dynasty. The author chronicles Li's rise from humble beginnings to his eventual position as one of the empire's most influential officials, responsible for modernizing China's military, economy, and foreign policy. Through a detailed analysis of Li's accomplishments, the book illuminates the complexities of China's transition during this period, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities China faced as it navigated foreign influence and internal strife. The author's insights provide valuable context for understanding the legacies of both Li Hung-Chang and the Qing dynasty itself, emphasizing their enduring impact on China's political and cultural landscape. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Añadir al carritoTall 8vo. xxvii, [1], 298 pp. Photogravure frontisp. of the true Li Hung Chang w/ Lord Salisbury and Lord Curzon. Yellow publisher's cloth, black lettering front cover & spine (minor toning & staining from laid-in clipping, minor shelfwear, slight bumping to couple corners), still VG copy, from the library of Alice Brown Powell (1882-1971), who was responsible for naming the historic "Deepwood" home in Salem, OR, named after a favorite children's book by Albert Bigelow Paine, w/ bookplate for Zera Snow on front pastedown, and manuscript note in Powell's hand laid-in. Early printing of this obscure 20th-century hoax, supposedly written by the real Li Hung Chang, who had actually met former US Secretary of State John Foster in 1897 at a peace conference. Mannix (b. 1873) was a notorious prankster, and promoter of "fake news," often publishing interviews of dead celebrities, purporting himself to be a recovered alcoholic during Prohibition in order to secure lecture fees from Temperance Societies, fabricated atrocity stories during the Spanish-American War, and jailed for check forgery. He eventually ended up as the Astoria, OR newspaper Morning Astorian editor, and managed to bamboozle Houghton Mifflin in to paying him to look for the charlatan writer of the "Memoirs." He used the money to set up a his bogus Pacific Associated Press which reaped him vast profits in the early 1920s. See: Jay Robert Nash, Zanies: The World's Greatest Eccentrics, p. 233-234.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a collection of letters allegedly written in the early 20th century by a man claiming to be a member of the Boxer Rebellion. The author, using the pseudonym 'Li Hung Chang', an actual historical figure and high-ranking official in the late Qing dynasty, provides insights into the motivations and strategies of the Boxer movement. Through these letters, the author explores the complex historical context of China's relationship with the Western powers, critiquing the perceived arrogance and exploitative nature of Western imperialism. The book delves into the themes of cultural identity, resistance to foreign influence, and the struggle for self-determination, offering a unique perspective on a pivotal moment in Chinese history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
