Large 8vo, xxi + pp243 plus 3 pages of "opinions of the press" to rear, complete with photogravure frontis by Albert Letchford and 33 b/w illustrations by Ernest Griset (16 of them full page plates). Hardcover no dust jacket. Binding of blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and front board and gilt designs to both boards in good only condition with split down front side of spine, although binding still tight and solid with rubbing to edges and tips of boards and spine and some marks to back board. Inside inscribed " To my friend Maud , with the publishers compliments C-G. J, Xmas, 1893" along with stamp of "J Maud Matthews" to front free end paper with all other pages and plates with top edge gilt in surprisingly clean and bright condition with the odd spot of foxing. A nice signed copy of these 11 tales, translated by Burton from the Sanskrit Baital-Pachisi. Signed by Publisher.

Leather Bound. A set of twelve quarto volumes (26 x 18 cms), each uniformly-bound in 3/4 wine-red leather over woven green cloth, with marbled endpapers and the top edges gilt. All volumes remain tightly-bound, with minor evidence of rubbing to the extremities. Each volume carries a rather nice bookplate of J. H. Burton, depicting a schooner in full sail bordered by mermaids. The bookplate is initialled "HN" (Harold Nelson, famed British bookplate designer, artist, and engraver). Internally, all volumes are in excellent condition and appear to have been seldom read or even opened. The words "Kamashastra Edition" appear at the bottom of the spine of each volume. The magnificent "Library Edition" of The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night translated from the Arabic by Captain Sir R. F. Burton and reprinted from the original 1885 privately-circulated Kamashastra Society edition. It is edited by Leonard C. Smithers and illustrated by a series of seventy-one inserted original illustrations reproduced from the original pictures in oils specially painted by Albert Letchford.

It was published privately by the Kamashastra Society as much of the material was deemed inappropriate at the time due to its sexual nature. Earlier editions had been expurgated by Burton's widow. This edition presents for the first time an unexpurgated text with the Albert Letchford illustration.

Several years later, H.S. Nichols published a twelve-volume illustrated edition (1897) featuring illustrations by the Burton's family painter, Albert Letchford, who was employed to paint portraits of the family and eventually entrusted to make a cast of Burton's head after his death. Published the same year as the illustrated edition, this American collection of Letchford's seventy Arabian Nights illustrations lushly captures the sensuality of Burton's translation in black and white photogravures. The Kamashastra Society was a fictional organisation founded by Richard Burton and Forster Fitzgerald to act as a legal device to avoid prosecution under obscenity laws, as they published risque works.'Arabian Nights', or 'One Thousand and One Nights', is a collection of folk tales from the Middle East. It was collected over centuries, with the roots of the tales being traced from Greek, Indian, Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Jewish folklore. The tales are being told by Scheherazade to the King Shahryar, in a bid to save her life. After discovering his wife was cheating on him, he killed her, and vowed to marry a new virgin every day, and then behead them the next. In this vein, he had killed one-thousand and one women before marrying Scheherazade. Scheherazade entices the King by telling him a story on their first night together, pausing halfway through as the sun came up. The King, being absorbed by the story, keeps Scheherazade alive, eager to hear more from her.This translation is by Richard Burton. Burton's translation is celebrated, but was only able to be printed in subscribers-only editions upon the publication, due to the sexual content in the tales, which were frowned upon at the time. Lacking a portion of the front label, with an additional label adhered to the spine, which is discoloured and chipped. Marking to paste downs, with fraying to the cloth. Good. book.
