The following descriptive paragraph from the dust jacket flap: 'Produced and circulated outside the elite sphere of fine art, folk art appealed to the middle-class Americans who were eager to express their identities, interests, and social ambitions through these decorative, vernacular objects. This catalogue presents new research on the Colby College Museum of Art's important collection of paintings, sculptures, needleworks, and works on paper by self-trained artists working primarily in the eastern part of the United States during the long nineteenth century. A third essay by Tanya Sheehan explores the complex relationship between folk art, fine art, and American visual culture. More than sixty catalogue entries by scholars, curators, and Colby students identify previously unknown makers and subjects, uncover new information about the construction and original contexts of works in the collection, and enlarge our understanding of what these artworks meant for the people who made and displayed them. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st. Pictorial boards, 183 pages, illustrations (some colour); 29 cm. Catalogue of an exhibition held September 12, 2012 to January 7, 2013 at the Newark Museum; and other venues. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "In the aftermath of the Civil War, the American girl seemed transformed at once more introspective and adventurous than her counterpart of the previous generation. For the first time, girls claimed the attention of genre artists, and though the culture still prized the demure female child of the past, complementary images of angel and tomboy emerged as competing visions of this new generation. 'Angels and Tomboys' explores the diverse ways 19th-century artists portrayed girls, from the sentimental stereotype to the free-spirited individual. Works by John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer and others reveal a new, provocative psychological element not found in early Victorian portraiture, while the tomboys in Lilly Martin Spencer's paintings and the angels by John George Brown underscore the complexity of young girlhood." - Publisher. A Usable Past brings together paintings, sculptures and works on paper by self-trained artists working in the eastern part of the US during the 19th century. Produced and originally circulated outside the sphere of fine art, these objects emerged from vernacular traditions that favored decorative aesthetics over mimesis. In the 20th century, artists, scholars and collectors came to believe that artworks like these expressed such supposedly quintessential American values as industriousness and ingenuity, and that they also served as native precursors to modernism. Featuring new scholarship, A Usable Past features highlights of Colby College's extensive holdings of American folk art.
