Larsen's Japlish photo essay is a living anthology of "found poetry" obliquely reminiscent of Irving Penn's classic Worlds in a Small Room, which likewise reveals cultures around the world through the social lens of fashion. Both artists share the same broad strokes; the difference is that Larsen's small rooms are the crowded, fast-moving streets. Japlish is a term used in Tokyo to describe Euro-American expressions found in Japanese newspapers. English becomes incorporated, sometimes misspelled, always with eccentric phrasing.
