Paperback. Condición: Good. Recent studies in the area of theology and gender have made some groundbreaking insights into the ways in which traditional theology influences--in sometimes harmful ways--the cognitive, emotional, and spiritual development of women. As a result of such studies, efforts are being made to incorporate women's experiences into theological construction. This is being done on two fronts: women's experience of caring and connecting is being recovered as a voice in theology; and patterns of faith socialization overemphasizing caring and connection (to the exclusion of self-care and self-assertion) are being challenged for their role in thwarting female development. Both of these efforts have important implications for practice in communities of faith. Specifically, Carol Lakey Hess argues the importance of the integration in communities of faith of women's need for separation and connection through what she calls hard dialogue and deep connections. In Caretakers of Our Common House, she envisions and advocates the significance of an educational process for girls and women in communities of faith which will nurture them towards being caretakers of their own house (self) and at the same time of our common house (the community of faith). This highly readable study asks whether the Church can make a difference in the development of young women in a culture that destroys the self-esteem of girls. Caretakers of Our Common House should be required reading for all those involved in theological education and ministry. A truly engaging book. --Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, Krister Stendahl Professor of Scripture and Interpretation, Harvard Divinity School.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. Scandinavians work less than we do, they have free childcare and healthcare, and they're just generally happier. We're told that we can't have what they have. but what if we can? In Viking Economics, George Lakey explains how the Nordic system works and shows us that if we put in the hard work Scandinavians did not that long ago, we, too, can have a fairer economic policy.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. A memoir of a Quaker activist and master storyteller on his involvement in struggles for peace, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, labor justice, and the environment, whose life will be the subject of a new documentary film coming in 2023. From his first arrest in the Civil Rights era to his most recent during a climate justice march at the age of 83, George Lakey has committed his life to a mission of building a better world through movements for justice. Lakey draws readers into the center of history-making events, telling often serious stories with playfulness and intimacy. In this memoir, he describes the personal, political, and theoretical-coming out as bisexual to his Quaker community while known as a church leader and family man, protesting against the war in Vietnam by delivering medical supplies through the naval blockade in the South China Sea, and applying his academic study of nonviolent resistance to creative tactics in direct action campaigns. From strategies he learned as a young man facing violence in the streets to risking his life as an unarmed bodyguard for Sri Lankan human rights lawyers, Lakey recounts his experience living out the tension between commitment to family and mission. Drawing strength from his community to fight cancer, survive painful parenting struggles, and create networks to help prevent activist burnout, this book shows readers how to find hope in even the darkest times through strategic, joyful activism.…
