Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Rare 1841 copy of Lady Pakington's, "The Art of Contentment." The book is in very good condition with just some minor signs of wear and age. The full leather covers only have some minor wear with a little darkening to the spine. The binding is good and sound. There is a period name inscription to the top margin of the title page. The interior is lightly toned from age but mostly nice and clean with just the occasional light bit of foxing. A couple of pages have a creased corner. Along with that, there may be the very occasional page with some kind of other minor imperfection such as a minor stain or marking, light wrinkle, nick or tiny chip, etc. Generally though, it's a nice copy. The book measures approximately 6 3/8 inches by 4 inches and is 174 pages long with a black and white frontispiece.

The original English version went through more than 30 editions and three more Danish editions were published in 1740, 1765 and finally in 1779. For two centuries it was both a popular and influential work within, primarily Anglican, but also protestant, tradition. It was first published anonymously in 1658, with an introduction by Henry Hammond (1605-1660). The authorship was initially attributed to Lady Dorothy Pakington but the consensus view of modern scholars attributes the book to Richard Allestree. The authorship remained a secret, and over the years it has been attributed to at least 27 people, beginning with Hammond himself. Thesaurus 312Biblioteca Danica 1, 282.
