Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of medieval scholia, or marginal annotations by scholars and students, on the 13th-century epic poem Thebaid by the Latin poet Statius. The book contains a vast corpus of notes and commentaries by scholars working from the 8th to the 15th centuries. The author of this book has collected these annotations into a single volume, which offers unique insights into the methods, knowledge, and ideas of medieval commentators, and provides a new resource for the study of Statius's poem and the transmission of classical texts in the Middle Ages. Through the inclusion of texts from second and third generation scholia, the author demonstrates the ways in which new interpretations of Statius's Thebaid emerged and circulated, opening a window into the medieval understanding of classical literature. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a collection of notes under the title, Placidus Commentary on Statius, that are attributed to a certain Lactantius or Luctatius Placidus, a scholar of the early medieval period. The text contains scholia, or marginal annotations, and allegorical commentary on Statius' epic poem, Thebaid, and his occasional verses, Achilleid. Though they are attributed to Placidus, it is likely that he collected and organized them rather than being the author. The book provides a window into the grammatical, mythological, and historical knowledge of Late Antiquity. The author explores the ancient texts using allegorical and mythological lenses, shedding light on the depth of learning of the period. The book is of great value to scholars of ancient literature, particularly those studying Statius and the myths and customs of Classical Antiquity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book includes a collection of over 200 glossae, commentaries on archaic and rare Latin words, mostly collected between the 5th and 6th centuries. These texts have proved immensely valuable for scholars, being one of the primary sources of information on the vocabulary of early Latin. Compilers of glossaries relied heavily on the work of Placidus, whose name appears in many of the glossae. But the author also drew upon the work of other less well-known scholars, whose opinions are often cited in these commentaries. The entries offer fascinating glimpses into ancient customs and history and contribute to our understanding of the development of the Latin language and the continuity of ideas and practices from the classical world into the Middle Ages. Taschenbuch.
