Inquiring into the literary intricacies of colonial trade, dismantling the commodification processes inherent in the discourse of imperial conquest, and reflecting how they survive in the culture of an overtly post-colonial ear - these were the chief objectives of 'Ebony, Ivory and Tea'. Both the papers delivered and the discussions that followed revealed a number of consistent characteristics'. J.M. Coetzee contributes an essay on 'The Novel in Africa.'
