Hardcover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition. As new condition color photographic boards. Includes Preliminary Page Quote by Carol Shields; Author Dedication; A Note From the Photographer; Acknowledgments; A Note About the Book; and About the Author/Photographer. Signed and inscribed by the author/photographer with thin black Sharpie on the blank first free front endpaper. "In this work I have taken old objects, no longer in use, and invested them with dignity, poignancy, and humor. When assembled, the pieces create a luminous and beautiful world of their own that is more mysterious, powerful, and exciting than if the objects stood alone. My hope is that these photographs will speak to your heart as well as delight your eyes, rekindling fond memories of your own." - from the rear outer cover. "This book is about objects found in dusty corners of barns, basements, attics or garages .or sometimes treasured family heirlooms proudly displayed. Most of these objects are no longer used, replaced by more modern equipment or by something more fashionable. Some are used as decoration. All of these things are visually interesting . silent souvenirs of life in a different era. This body of photographs is my response to these objects. Sometimes I photographed them as I found them .feeling that the light and the cobwebs wove their own quiet magic. Other times I felt the need to combine the objects to create a more interesting statement. Trained as a painter, I bring the same formalist concerns to photography .but now I create with lens and light instead of brush and pigment. Working intuitively, I arrange objects until some sort of balance is reached. Color, shape, texture, and other elements of design are all considered. I try to take the commonplace and invest the pieces with beauty, dignity, poignancy, or humor. Bringing these pieces back to life is my goal. What if these objects could speak to us of times gone by and tell us something about the people who owned them? On the following pages some do indeed seem to speak for themselves, while others are given voice through commentary, quotations, and poetry. My thanks go to those authors who have responded to these photographs by adding their interpretations to my own. - Betsy Wurl Mckean" - from A Note from the Photographer. ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Betsy Wurl McKean is an award winning artist, educator, and fine art photographer. Betsy McKean loves to create her images, much as a stage manager does by assembling objects, paying particular attention to mood and composition, and especially the quality of light. Originally trained as a painter with a MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, Betsy McKean's work is in museum collections, as well as corporate and private ones. Here work has been shown in numerous exhibitions throughout the United States including the Virginia Museum and the Smithsonian. Born in Milwaukee, WI, she served as Charwoman of the Art Department of Richard Bland College of the College of William and Mary and also taught for the University of Kentucky, the University of Virginia, and the Vero Beach Museum of Art. "It is not that I belong to the past, but the past that belongs to me." - Mary Astin. McKean, Betsy Wurl (photography) (ilustrador). Signed by Author(s).…

Hardback. Condición: New. The book looks at ways of world-building in prose fictions of cosmic voyage in the seventeenth century. With the rise of the New Astronomy, there equally was a resurgence of the cosmic voyage in fiction. Various models of the universe were reimagined in prose form. Most of these voyages explore imagined versions of a world in the moon, such as the cosmic voyages by Johannes Kepler, Francis Godwin and Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac. In Margaret Cavendish's The Blazing World, an eponymous imaginary planet is introduced. The book analyses the world-building of cosmic voyages by combining theories of world-building with contemporary concepts from early modern literature. It shows how imaginary worlds were created in early modern prose literature.…
