paperback. 2018 First Edition. 272pp, paperback, New, with a label signed by Beau Riffenburgh, also signed by Geir Klover, who wrote the Introduction. Printed on quality paper. The story of Salomon August Andree`s balloon expedition towards the North Pole in 1897. Supported by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and funded by…people like King Oscar II and Alfred Nobel, the expedition was the subject of enormous interest. The first attempt to launch the balloon, The Eagle, in the summer of 1896 from Danes Island, on the west of the Svalbard Archipelago, failed due to strong winds. When Andrée next tried, on 11 July 1897, together with his companions engineer Knut Frænkel and photographer Nils Strindberg the balloon did set off and sailed for 65 hours. But already at the lift-off the gondola had lost two of the three sliding ropes that were supposed to drag on the ice and function as a kind of rudder. Within ten hours of lift-off, they were caught by powerful winds and rain was creating ice on the balloon. It is likely that Andrée realized before the flight ended that they would never come near the pole. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.

paperback. 2017 First Edition. 240pp, paperback, printed on quality paper, New. The Southern Cross Expedition was the first to winter on the Antarctic mainland. Its members brought home important scientific data, made the first sledging journeys with dogs in Antarctica, proved it was possible to land on the Great Barrier, and ev…en set a farthest south record after a short skiing journey on the Barrier. Yet, Borchgrevink and the story of his expedition are practically unknown outside the limited circle of Antarctic enthusiasts. The expedition was not harmonious. Borchgrevink was criticised for poor leadership and for ignoring the work completed by the scientists during the expedition. Important notebooks and samples were lost or given away on the return journey. This book includes a number of personal letters and newspaper articles that shed light on the aftermath of the expedition and explains why it took 30 years before Borchgrevink received his well-deserved honours from the Royal Geographical Society. The book contains numerous excerpts from previously unpublished diaries and letters written during the expedition. It is illustrated with more than 100 original photos, maps, and newspaper articles. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.

paperback. 2016 First Edition. 384pp, paperback, New. Printed on quality paper. Antarctic history is full of bold, daring men who explored new places like Amundsen, or Scott, or Shackleton. It tells of men who advanced the cause of science, such as Mawson or Bruce. But there is no other figure in the history of the Antarctic who… did so many significant things so successfully as Carl Anton Larsen. He was an explorer, who found previously undiscovered lands and bodies of ice in the Weddell Sea region. He was a contributor to science, who made key discoveries and observations and later donated valuable scientific collections to a number of Norwegian and Swedish museums. He was a leader, who fought against the odds to keep his men alive when the Antarctic sank, and then made a daring open-boat journey to save them. This book tells his story. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.

paperback. 2017 First Edition. 345pp, paperback, printed on quality paper, New, signed by Geir Klover and with a label signed by Beau Riffenburgh. Astrup and Peary had caused an international sensation with their 1300 mile trek across Northern Greenland. Astrup had helped pioneer the combination of skiing and dog sledging, and w…as infatuated with the life of the Inuit. He had impressed Peary and had established warm friendships with the other expedition members. On his arrival in Norway, he was widely celebrated in the media and elsewhere, and gave a number of lectures in southern Norway. After receiving international recognition for his explorations and his recently published book, and in the midst of planning new expeditions to the Polar Regions, he was found dead in the mountains of Hjerkinn, mid Norway. He was only 24 years old. Today, sadly, Astrup is little known outside the realm of Arctic historians. How and why did his disappearance from popular knowledge occur, and who was this shooting star in the polar world? This first book in English on Eivind Astrup tells the story of his short life in the Arctic. It contains many of Astrup's writings, his communications with Peary, excerpts from previously unpublished letters and reports, his Inuit dictionary, and more than 480 original photos, maps, and newspaper articles. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.
