Broschur / Softcover. 1. Aufl. Paperback. Condición: New. Reyner Banham once said of the great architecture historian Esther McCoy (1904-1989) that "no-one can write about architecture in California without acknowledging her as the mother of us all." Esther McCoy first moved to Los Angeles in 1932, commencing what would be a lifelong infatuation with the city's architecture and a vocation as the pre-eminent historian of west coast modernist architecture. Initially employed as a draftswoman in the studio of R.M. Schindler, McCoy became intimately involved in the preservationist politics of Los Angeles, contributing significant coverage of controversial slum clearances and spending nearly a decade campaigning to save Dodge House in West Hollywood from demolition. By 1960, McCoy had published Five California Architects, her seminal study of the work of Irving Gill, Charles and Henry Greene, Bernard Maybeck and Rudolf Schindler. Through this pioneering volume and subsequent books, essays and lectures, McCoy established the terms by which we understand the history of California modernism today. Sympathetic Seeing: Esther McCoy and the Heart of American Modernist Architecture and Design is the first major catalogue to survey this distinguished figure's life and work. Highlighting the extraordinary range and significance of her presence in the field, this volume affirms McCoy's place as a key figure in American architectural history.…

The project is inspired by the MAK Urban Future Initiative Fellowship (UFI), which was launched by the MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House in Los Angeles in 2008. Hardcover. Condición: New. In an urban zone crisscrossed by multilane freeways and gridded with broad boulevards, the roadside billboards of Los Angeles may well be the city's most visible platform for art. How Many Billboards? documents a 2010 project in which billboards in Los Angeles were turned over to 23 artists to do with as they wished, asserting the ongoing legacy of California Conceptualism and its combination of language-based strategies with Pop-inflected aesthetics. "Astonish!" declares Kenneth Anger's billboard, in commanding upper-case orange lettering, recapitulating Diaghilev's famous advice to Cocteau. "I Look Good, I Know," says Yvonne Rainer's billboard; "I Can't Hear, I Can't See, But I Look Good." Martha Rosler's collaboration with Josh Neufeld makes a plea for spending on higher education in California, and Renee Green's image of a darkened shore with silhouetted figures gathered near a tourist ferry is accompanied by the two-line commentary "Strangers begin again/Native strangers hosting." Other artists participating in this occasion are Michael Asher, Jennifer Bornstein, Eileen Cowin, Christina Fernandez, Ken Gonzales Day, Kira Lynn Harris, Larry Johnson, John Knight, David Lamelas, Brandon Lattu, Daniel Joseph Martinez, Kori Newkirk, Allen Ruppersberg, Allan Sekula, Susan Silton, Kerry Tribe, Jim Welling and Lauren Woods. Essays by Kimberli Meyer, Gloria Sutton and Nizan Shaked, who co-curated the project, contextualize the works in relation to Conceptual and Pop art idioms, provide background material on the artists and outline the MAK Center's plans to enliven public space.…

Hardcover. Condición: New. Los Angeles-based new media artist Jennifer Steinkamp's installation, "Dervish," anchored the United States presentation at the 11th International Cairo Biennale in 2008. Steinkamp is known for virtually transforming architectural space through her immersive video works, in a manner that tests viewers' sense of perception, combining political and cultural elements with state-of-the-art technologies to create a sophisticated illusionism. This volume is designed to read from right to left, in accordance with Arabic conventions. It features the photographic series, Dervish Cairo, published here for the first time, as well as a newly-commissioned essay by art historian Nizan Shaked and U. S. commissioner Kimberli Meyer laying out a new theoretical basis for the artist's multifaceted practice. …
