Two-Volume DELUXE LARGE PAPER LIMITED FIRST EDITION numbered by publisher on printed limitation page. Two volumes complete. Original orange cloth boards with gilt coat of arms on front covers, navy spines and corners with gilt lettering spines, TEG, original dark greenish navy coated EPs, untrimmed fore-edge and bottom edge both volumes. Both volumes have loss of much of the spine covering (see photos), but bindings are very solid and not broken or cracked. This set is an obvious candidate for rebacking. The covers have significant rubbing along edges and corners but the boards are relatively clean and bright with a few faint dark smudges (nothing serious). Each volume has previous owner's bookplate and small bookseller ticket on front pastedown otherwise no owner marks or writing on any pages, Some fore-edge foxing is present but nearly all pages are completely free of foxing and are clean. Each volume measures 251mm tall x 200mm (compared to 195mm tall for the regular first edition). Volume one has 494 pages, 20 b/w full-page illustrations and photos, 57 b/w in-text illustrations and photos, index. Sunbeam, RYS was a composite-hulled barquentine with an auxiliary steam engine, which was launched in England in 1874. She was a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. She was the yacht of Thomas Brassey, 1st Earl Brassey until his death in 1918. His wife Anna Brassey wrote several popular books about their voyages aboard her, which were published between 1879 and 1889. This particular work is by the boats owner Thomas Brassey, and once again discusses sea voyages, and the author experience of the water. Brassey, born in 1836, was a Earl as well as a Liberal politician. Passionate about maritime he was the founder of The Naval Annual, a volume comprised of expansive information of naval history. Due to these publications, documenting the boat voyages, and the passion of its two owners, Sunbeam became an object of public interest and fascination. The Royal Yacht Squadron, or R.Y.S. is a prestigious yacht club, based in the Isle of White, to be member is considered a privilege. Member yachts add to suffix 'RYS' to their name, and are allowed to fly the flag of the Royal Navy. It originated in 1815, as a group of 42 men with an interest in yachting.

[?], going to Germany; gossip; alliance with [William?] Cunard [shipowner?] of Mount Lebanon, "new villa", in Twickenham neighbourhood) and the subjects they discuss together, "mechanics, art patents, husbandry and last tho not least religion at full length"; civilised dissent on religion keeps his mind active; Cunard about to make a trip to America [note added in another hand giving place of writing and date, "Gordon House, Isleworth 16 Sept 1878"; also added on reverse a newspaper clipping paid down with obit for Kilmorey, with note giving date of death and age (93). 3rd Earl of Kilmorey writes in July 1880 about daily increase of duties, glad that the end was as it was and looking forward ot meeting him as a friend. On another page, he wrotes a heartfelt prayer, expressing his need for God's pity at length. WITH: A. [MS.] "Extract of a letter from myself (CRW [C.R. Williams] giving an account of the Funeral of the Earl of Kilmorey who died at Gordon House at the age of 93", 2pp. fol. B. [Printed pamphlet] "The Story of a Certain Round Table" ([May 1879), 8pp., 8vo, formerly tipped in something, now sunned and loose and/detached where sewn. The pamphlet referred to a Roman Mosaic Table commissioned by Kilmorey when on a visit to Rome. The Table gained first prize at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Kilmorey (according to the account accompanying these items) gave it to his great friend Caroline, Dowager Marchioness of Downshire who later decided to sell it, causing the rift discussed in the pamphlet. It's now in the V & A.(http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O157742/table-the-beautiful-sky-of-italy/). No copy on COPAC or WorldCat. Note: Kilmorey's Family Seat is now at Mourne Park, Newry, Co. According to the diarist Sir Edward Walter Hamilton, the second reading of the Divorced Wife's Sister Bill caused 'great excitement'. Due to clerical opposition, the Bill did not reach the statute book until 1907, and even then in a limited form. These seven items provide an interesting glimpse into the inner workings of the Victorian legislative process. All are clear and complete, and docketed by Dalhousie in red. All in fair condition, with various degrees of aging. Letter One: Sir Thomas Henry Farrer ('S Th Farrer'); 16 July 1885; 27 Bryanston Square, on letterhead of the Athenaeum Club, Pall Mall. 12mo, 3 pp. He is enclosing a copy (not present) of a letter which he sent 'to the Spectator last year on the subject of the Deceased Wifes sister Bill. - It may possibly be of some use to you, as it is a real case - my own. | I have always felt strongly against our present law, as a gross piece of clerical tyranny: - But I feel even yet more strongly against the hypocrisy which, afraid of resting the case on its real ground of ecclesiastical authority, tries to support it by social arguments which are if possible more revolting than they are false.' While he could not put his name to 'such a letter', 'the actual experience of one who has known what a sister in law may be - is perhaps of some value'. Letter Five: Douglas Graham, 5th Duke of Montrose ('Montrose'); 28 May 1885; on letterhead of Buchanan Castle, Glasgow. He is sure 'Enfield' would 'assist in the search'.
