Ein internationales Seminar, das unter dem Thema »Rückbesinnung auf kulturelle Kontakte und Traditionen« steht, überzeugt ihn ironischerweise von den begrenzten Möglichkeiten menschlicher Kommunikation. Seine Erlebnisse auf einer ungewöhnlichen Party, die auch Teil eines Geiseldramas sein könnte, rufen ihm die Unzulänglichkeit des Menschen ins Bewußtsein, während ihm der kluge Regenbaum als vollkommenes Wesen erscheint. Daß Oe die Natur nicht idealisiert, zeigt sein parabelähnlicher Kurzroman »Der Sündenbock«. Hier ist der Erzähler ein Arzt, der als Kind bei einer Hochwasserkatastrophe die Eltern verlor und seine Ausbildung der Dorfgemeinschaft auf Shikoku verdankt. Das daraus entstehende, durch die lokale religiöse Tradition modifizierte und für die japanische Gesellschaft charakteristische Abhängigkeitsverhältnis stürzt ihn in eine tiefe Krise. Er schwankt zwischen Pflichtgefühl und der nicht unbegründeten Furcht, vereinnahmt und zum Sündenbock gemacht zu werden ein Konflikt, dem er sich durch die Flucht nach Mexiko zu entziehen glaubt. Kenzaburo Oe, 1935 in Ose auf Shikoku als Sohn eines Grundbesitzers geboren, begann zu schreiben, als er in Tokyo französische Literatur studierte.
