Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This story is about the Westward Expansion Era of our great American heritage as actually experienced by pioneer families spanning several generations. The original European immigrants began arriving on our shores about four hundred years ago and they were the founders of our country, which became a 'melting pot' for all these ethnic groups. These families eventually emerged from colonial times in early America however, and gradually started moving westward displacing the native Indian nations that were here before. The exemplary families of this story were thoroughly immersed in this western migration that has become known as the Western Expansion Era of our American History. This was also the period of the sad commentary regarding the displacement of the native Indian nations as they were crowded out of their homeland and eventually placed on reservations while the descendants of the migrating settlers continued to move on west as the new land opportunities became available. In this setting the story is told of these rugged and tenacious settlers on the frontier facing the hardships of 'hacking out' a homestead from the wilderness forest while facing the dangers of Indian uprisings and other encounters in the wild native environment. This new Our American Heritage series takes a genealogy approach in presenting our American History. This different look at our past through the eyes of some of our ancestors affords a more personal touch that results in a deeper understanding and more lasting impressions that are not usually garnered through the reading of textbooks. Images of ancestors engaged in the associated historic events are enabled to be brought into sharper focus from their often fuzzy obscurity. Such historic accounts in our ancestor's lives are intertwined and are all integrally wrapped up together in our American History; and we should know them both better than just the cursory impression gained from a smile in a faded photograph or a few memorized dates of some long ago historic events. Some of these ancestor generations were born in special eras with unique sets of circumstances and challenges that fate had designated for them; and for which make interesting life stories. For these reasons they provide enjoyable and worthwhile reading as well as a better appreciation of our great American heritage. The exemplary families of this story first settled in western Pennsylvania before moving on to North Carolina, and then on successively to Ohio, Indiana, and finally Kansas, always staying on the very edge of the wilderness, it seemed, as they moved on west. The lives of these descending generations were full of the usual gamut of human experiences and accomplishments. They homesteaded, raised children, farmed, mined and other such endeavors, and overcame their adversities until the next generation took over. Each family has ancestors waiting to be remembered and family stories waiting to be written. These unique cameo glimpses of family experiences help to fill in the pieces of our history and make them more interesting. For some of us the hardy pioneer families of this story are buried and long forgotten in an era that has long ago quietly disappeared into the past. Yet some of us in these succeeding generations can still hear those voices calling to us from across the years. Our ancestors left many footprints in time in many places, such as their names on streets, gravestones, granite markers around old battlefields, and headstones on buildings. But most of all they left behind the vast amount of historic records, which were used to document the accounts of this story. They served as resounding echoes from the past, without which this story could not have been written. There is a legacy left behind for each life that is lived, and if a person is remembered by those left behind, that person lives Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This story is about the lives of two generations of deep shaft coal miners and their families primarily during the five decades between 1890 and 1940. After immigration from Europe they spent their entire lives working and living in the mines and their associated camps in the southeast Kansas coal belt and the surrounding four-state area. In addition to having much local significance, due to all the local color and familiar scenes of its regional setting, it is definitive of immigrants and coal mining elsewhere. It turns back the clock for us and transports us back for a real taste of the lives of many of our beloved area ancestors during this early Industrial Evolution Era. This was the age of steam power, resulting in a worldwide boom in the coal mining industry. Thousands of willing workers were needed to work in the many new mines and factories that were springing up. Many were coming from the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, Italy, and other southern and Eastern European nations at this time. They were willing workers full of high ideals and believing that their hard work and virtue would see them through the hard times that lay ahead. They exemplified the poor but honest, self-disciplined, and hard-working characters that Horatio Alger had written about earlier. European families were immigrating to this country by the thousands seeking the greater offered opportunities. They didn't expect all the deprivation, desparity, and drudgery that most of them found waiting on them over here. Perhaps many thought that things would get better over here than the famine, oppression, and tyranny they had left behind. They were looking for the freedom and opportunity for a new start; and possibly even a rung or two up the social ladder. They all came together in what became a 'melting pot' for all these many ethnic groups and eventually became proud and patriotic American citizens Nevertheless most of them were working long hours for short pay, and had dangerous and unhealthy working conditions down in the deep coal mines or working in the many sweat-shop factories in the cities. And most of the families had to become accustomed to deprivation and living in the rather oppressive, and sometimes even degrading conditions of the coal camps, or in the dirty tenement housing in the big cities. In addition, due to the usual exploitation of most of these workers at this time, widespread labor problems and resulting riots were often occurring. After a decade or so things did start to get better for the immigrant miners. Technology was changing people's lives, especially during the first decades after the turn of the century in 1900, with everything coming along as from electric lights, telephones, and household appliances to horseless carriages, mechanized equipment, and other labor-saving devices. All these new conveniences meant new sources of energy were needed besides just coal, such as oil, and electricity; and new job opportunities besides just miners, such as oilmen, railroad men, highway construction men, and a multitude of new manufacturing workers for such expanding new industries as the motorcar plants, and textile mills. The story also reveals these generation's, personal problems and disappointments. It also reveals their reaction to the national news events that were taking place around them then, as well as the implications they had on their lives. These would include WWI, the Roaring Twenties and Great Depression years, and WWII. It tells about their struggling efforts in this rapidly changing era that was the vanguard of the rise to prominence of our great American nation. Today who would ever know that deep shaft immigrant coal miners and their families had ever once lived and worked here? It is now no more than a dream remembered; a civilization buried and gone in an era that has almost disappeared into the pa Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. It's conventional to believe that there is a seed planted in all humankind prompting the seeking out of a deity. Therefore, although religion may not be in the forefront of people's lives, it is certainly somewhere in the background or around the corner in everyone's life, and for this reason these pages have relevance. But to better understand the contemporary church and the Christian faith that it represents, it is necessary to first look at the past, study the biblical and extra-biblical evidence, and be willing to venture out beyond the comfort zone of accumulated church orthodoxy to critically examine this faith. The church has been revered through the centuries and embodies the grandest hopes that our hearts cling to. The church's effigy is prestigious with bell towers chiming the reverence and organs resounding the sanctity. So ageless, immutable, and perpetually the church perseveres; an edifice on high ground ensconced and securely sheltered behind its doctrines, creeds, and saints; settled snuggly behind the stained glass on its pious pedestal, an awe-inspiring passing image revered by most through a lifetime of reverent glances. Perish the thought however that the church would function only as a church family social organization, or that the extent of any church worship service would consist only of such things as an ego-boosting vehicle of fashion or for uplifting spirits, prepared musical and impressive individual prayer performances, or a stage from which to strut a pulpit performance or other prepared production. The church pedestal however, on which rests the Christian faith's higher ideals, esteem, and respect, seems to have been markedly lowered from what it once was. We seem to be becoming a worldlier and more secular nation less bound by good morals and religious principles. This is due in part by the external societal changes, but also the internal causes within the church. These pages look for some of the reasons why. One Sunday morning after going to church I finally got around to asking myself, "What's wrong here; what's wrong with my Christian faith? What parts of it do I really accept with conviction? It is probably certain that we can never know the exact nature of our Christian faith, but probably just as certain is the fact that we can and should know the facts better than what has been disseminated by the church, and this is not acceptable. In addition, and even with the best of intentions, many eager evangelistic motivated church leaders use an emotional presentation while quoting scripture out of context and finding imaginary secondary meanings for it to make their point. This type of exorbitant fast and loose use of the scripture over time also lessens the credibility of the faith. Through remedial satire and dramatic monologue expression, this book holds a mirror up reflecting this less acceptable image of the past and present Christian experience. It should be emphasized that reverence to God and Christ Jesus are held to be preeminent and above reproach, and this remedial satirical quest is not about Christ Jesus' actual Christology. It is however about some of the church's adopted dogma, practices, and methods, its rather sordid early historic record, and the serving of its own self-interests at the expense of the integrity of the authentic Christology of the Christian faith, the primary reason for its existence. The book takes us in search of a more reasonable, tolerant, and responsible Christian faith that affords more integrity and conviction. Although not presumed as providing conclusive answers or as a critique on the Christian Church orthodoxy, it is intended to provoke thought, engender tolerance and a well-earned sense of humility, and perhaps even reason enough for re-examining our faith. To say that God is still working on us and that we have not quite yet reach Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Every generation has its own unique story to tell, especially about its early childhood years. These are the formative years when lifelong impressions are formed, and are dearly remembered as the good old days. These stories are about the families of the Great Depression and World War II generation during the 30's and 40's decades. It is generally the period of the labor intensive low technology era before the beginning of the rapidly developing high technology society that would follow. It's said that out of the mouths of babes come truth and wisdom, and perhaps it's these perceptions that most reliably reveal those simpler yet challenging times. In these adult historic fiction stories the true emotions and concerns of the families are told, but as reflected through the eyes and innocence of the children. Freckles, the little girl from East Hollow, and Buddy, the little boy from the City Limits had much in common due to the similar life experiences of those of the generation of these stories. They had their carefree days at play with vivid imaginations and outrageous adventures, but they also had the responsibility of doing their chores and becoming a contributing member of the family. They may have been naive, having a lot to learn about life; yet they exhibit in these stories a development of understanding, and the advancing maturity that was necessitated by the times. It was a period when the people's greatest concerns were centered in their own town, on their own street, or in their own backyard so to speak. These concerns were about such things as finding a job, making a living, raising a crop in a terrible and seemingly unending drought, and just finding a way for the family to survive during the terrible economic depression. Nevertheless it was a quiet period of innocence and mutual concern for each other. Everyone was just hanging on as best they could, but with an eternal optimism about the hope for better times to come. Generally people didn't have much, but appreciated what they had and learned how to be frugal due to the dire necessity. People had a strong work ethic and desire to improve their social standing and economic condition. It was a time when men were the wage earners and women were the homemakers and both were proud of their respective roles. Women cultivated their cooking, sewing, child raising, and other domestic skills, and the time was not yet passed when men were proud of their hunting, fishing, and other outdoor prowess. These skills, in addition to their regular work skills, were useful in supplementing their table fare, especially when jobs could not be found. People learned to become as self-sufficient as they could be, but they were often mutually dependent upon each other and quite willing to lend a helping hand. Home gardens were common as were the keeping of cows, chickens, and other domestic sources of food and supplies. Women did a lot of canning, mending, and sewing while the men took care of the home repairs and other pressing matters. The wives and children also helped with all the additional chores that were to be done, and often sought part time ways to supplement the family income. After the country was thrown into WWII, things started to get better. Everyone was very patriotic and tried to do their part to support the war effort. They understood and accepted the rationing, military draft, blackouts, shortages, and other inconveniences. People bought war bonds, made victory gardens, participated in paper drives, and collected metal to be used in the manufacture of war goods. Their sons gallantly went off to serve their country and their daughters did their part at home, sometimes taking the jobs left behind by the men that went off to war. The childhood memories of the generation of these stories may now be no more than a dream remembered for some, but the legac Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A religious faith is a fundamental human quality, and many Christians try to relate to it better, but it often seems so dated and detached. Dedicated church leaders look for ways to make it more appealing, but generally have been hesitant about presenting Christ Jesus' humanity and Jewish heritage, and how His original teachings were later affected during those turbulent historic times and by the expanding church. It is natural for Christians to question and refine their religious convictions and to pray that their adopted beliefs are acceptable in His sight. It is assumed that most Christians have at least a cursory understanding of the New Testament. The many available historical accounts, by Josephus, Tacitus, and others and the many non-canonized religious accounts written by such notable 'Church Fathers' as Clement, Eusebius and many others, have been rather ignored; regarding them as insignificant, and consequently requiring a greater demand on our faith. Whoever Jesus was, however, and whatever he stood for must be reconciled against the backdrop of the spectacle of His time. The mission of this book is to employ these additional valuable resources to fill this void and provide this compelling new insight to invigorate and reinforce the Christian faith- raising it to a higher level of integrity and confidence while adding vitality and visceral emotions- i.e. breathing new life into it by stepping into the first century environment with Jesus and those that followed after Him.The miracle of Christ Jesus, the messiah, mediator before God, and an instrument of our salvation is upheld and paramount, even though an alternate view of certain aspects of the Christian orthodoxy are felt necessary to more faithfully reflect our faith in the light of the original historic record and the subsequent expanded church dogma. This unique presentation provides a fresh and more eye-opening look at our Christian foundation of faith. Scriptural references, Roman and Jewish historical accounts, and other non-canonized religious scrolls by the Essenes and early 'Church Fathers' are integrally woven in as this first century life of Christ story and the apostles' evangelism are told. This more encompassing perspective also helps to reconcile many of the more striking scriptural enigmas that are commonly encountered. Little has been revealed about Jesus' early life before His three year public ministry - His family, His tumultuous historic environment, and His Jewish upbringing. The paramount question for any Christian in this regard is how these factors, together with God's magnificent intervention in Christ Jesus' life, ultimately influenced His teachings. We will be seeking the answer to this question. Over the recent centuries many Life of Christ stories have been written. Some of these, such as The Greatest Story Ever Told, Quo Vadis, and many others have received the church's sanction, but such many others as The Last Temptation of Christ and The Brook Kerith have been labeled as blasphemous. These are all popular and intriguing stories and illustrate a Christian's desire to know more. Later in the first century, Christ Jesus' followers must have begun to question themselves. This was when the Gospels were being written amidst all the national turmoil, their own fading memories, and the controversies regarding the many diverging and competing Jewish, Christian, and pagan Gentile beliefs. Today, twenty centuries later, Christians are still faced with this same problem, but a better understanding is attainable with the insight these extra-Biblical and historic resources can provide. So this is the life story of Christ Jesus and his Christology (Part I), which is followed by the Gospel about Jesus (Part II), which is the interpretation of His Christology as gathered from the impressions of his first generation followers, Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Imagine the tranquility of a rural Midwest setting suddenly shattered by the intrusion of Islamic terrorists, with their conscription of illegal alien Mexican forces, as they attempt to launch stolen missiles and carry out a ruthless terrorist plot. In this story, characters of contrasting lifestyles are involved as a former romance is rekindled, a loved one succumbs of cancer, and as the terrorist threat gradually unfolds. There may be a time for everything in life's passing seasons, but the disruption caused by the impending terrorist attack was unthinkable. A handsome young hi-tech corporate executive, being transferred back to the area, and an attractive small town college instructor are the leading characters, supported by other strong characters in the roles of a retired judge, a retired history teacher, a retired minister, and a couple of Vietnam vets. After a few weeks of mysterious occurring events all mayhem breaks out in an Ozark national forest as the military and various Federal security agencies are deployed to defeat the threat and avoid a disaster of major national proportions. The action-filled scenes come alive with high-tech military weapons, surveillance equipment, and dialogue, as a local news helicopter is shot down by a shoulder-fired surface to air missile, and then escalates from there in the thoroughly engaging scenes that follow. The story however is much more than just a love story or military action thriller. It is a human interest story about maturing adults and how lives and perspectives naturally change during the normal life junctures. Some adult lifestyles are exciting, others mundane; from younger vigorous persons seeking romance and excitement to elders spending their last years in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. These various lifestyles and the perspectives of the characters are revealed throughout on common subjects ranging from religion to politics and including such other topics as historical accounts, the environment, and various other social issues. Despite their occasional personal life storms, these are the contented and serene lifestyles that are rudely interrupted as the terrorist induced life-threatening circumstances come crashing down around them. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In Europe a poster outside a coal mine office read: Wanted- Coal Miners for American Mines- providing ocean steam passage, keep en-route, and railroad transportation- regular departure dates from the Antwerp Port. On that New Year's Day two Austrian miners responded and embarked on a great adventure to America, that great land of opportunity for the huddled masses, where they found jobs, wives, and happiness regardless of all the dangers, narrow escapes, and disappointments. In the late 1880's these two Austrian coal miner brothers were among the thousands of Europeans that immigrated to America to work in one of the many booming underground coal mines as replacement workers for the striking miners. They were looking for a better life, but instead found the same dangerous and unhealthy working conditions they had already been accustomed to. In addition they found the new adversities of foreign prejudices, squalid coal camp conditions, austere mining company practices, and increasing labor disturbances. Despite all this however they found plenty of excitement and adventure in the surrounding rip-roaring coal camps and mining towns. With the help of their steadfast friends, romantic encounters, and moonshine whiskey sedative, they eventually found a measure of happiness before a series of tragic events intervened. While the story unfolds in this authentic historic horse and buggy period and venues, the real flavor of this era is resurrected; and in addition to providing real insight into deep shaft underground mining and the miner's families, it spins a gripping action/adventure story. The two brothers get separated when one of them is accosted by some disgruntled striking miners during a mining dispute and has to go on the lam after an unfortunate triple murder in his own self-defense. He evades the pursuing posse and escapes to the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks to find work. All through the book the parallel stories are told of the two brothers in their often desperate situations. The one brother, failing to make a living off his farming, mining, and tie hacking for the expanding new railroads in the Ozark Counties, finally turns to riding with a renegade band of Bald Knobber raiders in Taney, Christian, and Ozark Counties. The other brother remains in Southeast Kansas Coal Belt. While enduring their difficulties and working their long hours for short pay, the coal miners and their families also managed to find time to enjoy their Saturday night adventures, and holiday celebrations- experiencing everything from dreary coal camp life to fancy mine convention ballrooms- from such activities as box socials, family gatherings, and quilting bees to saloon brawls, waylayings, and murders, and from pastoral picnics and hunting trips to flights to elude a pursuing posse, and riding with the Bald Knobbers. The families were saddened by the worsening of their family member's chronic 'black lung' condition and dreaded the day they might feel the rumbling earth after an explosion and the continuous wail of the steam whistle signaling trouble at the mine in the middle of the afternoon. Historic accounts are important because they create a dialogue across the generations. Readers drawn in by such stories also learn the related history along on the journey. Today who would ever know that deep shaft miners and their families had ever once lived and worked here? It is now no more than a dream remembered; a civilization buried and gone in an era that has almost disappeared into the past. Yet some of us in these succeeding generations can still hear those voices calling to us from across the years. Whatever our ancestors were, they are ours, the only ones that we will ever have. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. It's said that poetry lifts the veil from the hidden beauty of the world and that it is wisdom mingled with delightful pleasure. Poetry has been likened to a nightingale, who sits in solitude and sings to favor us with cheerful reflections; his auditors softened and entranced by the melody of this unseen musician. Much has been written about the importance and purpose of poetry. Poetry strengthens the moral nature of man in the same manner as exercise strengthens a limb. It awakens and enlarges the mind. Poetry evokes emotional responses and often acts in a dimension beyond our consciousness. It is able to exhibit the beauty of conceptions in all their naked truth and splendor. Poetry is powerful, and although it sometimes may be light and formative, it may also be insightful and reflect a maturity of greater significance. It expresses feelings and raises emotions to the degree that one's experiences allow them to identify and be connected. It has been said that poetry gets to the heart of the matter, and is efficient in that it says the most in the fewest number of well-chosen words. Poetry is intended to stimulate our latent inner thoughts and emotions. Our spirits are often heightened by such things as a cold plunge in a cold stream, or after some kind of moving performance or personal experience; or even while just enjoying one of nature's tranquil scenes or some other form of inebriating or exhilarating experience. This is probably fitting, since that is perhaps the way that poetry is often initially conceived and written. Writing in the early 19th century Shelley wrote in his Defense of Poetry that poetry expresses images of life's eternal truths. He said that textbooks traditionally present new facts that no one ever knew before, but that poetry is just the opposite in that it expresses things that are known already by everyone. The only caveat was that people can only realize and truly understand these truths, which are already in them, if they are able to openly be in resonance with them. He said that poems, in a collective sense, are vignettes that contain the individual sums of various human experiences, from every angle and perspective. Some poems help us explore the depths of a specific emotion or the beauty of nature; others help us grasp the fullness of mature thoughts, on some given subject, or help us experience life from within another framework. But all poems help us to become more human. An epitome or abstract gives a brief summary or representative type. In like manner poetry epitomizes something that is worthwhile that is buried in some story or large body of text, and is then a mirror that reflects these particular eternal truths to us. President John F. Kennedy wrote, "When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses, for art establishes the basic human truths which must serve as the touchstones of our sensibility and judgment, and the last champion of the individual mind against an intrusive society."
