Katharine Lee BatesHistorical BackgroundBates spent the summer of 1893 lecturing at Colorado College. Bates was among a group of visiting faculty (including Katharine Coman) that decided to "celebrate the close of the session by a merry expedition to the top of Pike's Peak." They made the ascent by prairie wagon. At the top, Bates later wrote, she was so moved by the breathtakingly beautiful Rocky Mountain scenery, with its "sea-like expanse of fertile country.under those ample skies," and "the opening lines of the hymn floated into my mind." She composed the stanzas in her notebook on the trip back. In addition to her view from Pike's Peak, Bates included other sights she encountered during her train trip to Colorado. The wheat fields of Kansas are found in the first verse, and Bates commemorated her visit to the "White City" of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago-the "alabaster cities" of the fourth verse.In 1895, her poem was first published in The Congregationalist and almost immediately set to music, first to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne."[1] Eventually, it was set to the tune of Samuel A. Ward's "Materna." As early as 1926, America the Beautiful was proposed as the national anthem. The older Star-Spangled Banner won out - so far!Bates revised the poem in 1904 to make the "phraseology more simple and direct" for composers to set the lyrics to music.[2] She made minor changes again in 1911 when it was published in her book, America the Beautiful and Other Poems.[3] This copy is of the final version.Bates penned very few longhand copies and even had a printed version created to distribute in response to requests. On the immediate and long-lasting success of the song, Bates said, "That the hymn has gained, in these twenty-odd years, such a hold as it has upon our people, is clearly due to the fact that Americans are at heart idealists, with a fundamental faith in human brotherhood."[4]Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929) was born in Massachusetts and moved to Wellesley as a child. She graduated from Wellesley High School in 1874 and from Wellesley College in 1880. She became a professor of English Literature at Wellesley, where she taught from 1880 to 1925. She also studied at Oxford and earned a master's degree in arts from Wellesley. In 1915, she was a founder of the New England Poetry Club and served as its president. She retired in 1925 and spent her remaining years in Wellesley. In addition to several volumes of poetry, she wrote several books on Shakespeare and pre-Shakespearean English religious drama. She was also involved in social reform activities. She never married and had no children, though she lived with fellow professor Katharine Coman (1857-1915) for twenty-five years in what some scholars have deemed a lesbian relationship and othe.
