Die Entwicklung der Atombombe war das größte geheime Unternehmen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als Anfang 1939 die Entdeckung der Kernspaltung bekannt wurde, stand der Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges kurz bevor. So war die weitere Atomforschung von dem Ziel geprägt, eine kriegsentscheidende Waffe zu entwickeln. Den dramatischen Wettlauf gewannen die Amerikaner. Doch in kurzer Zeit konnte die Sowjetunion den Vorsprung aufholen. Dies gelang vor allem durch den Abbau der Uranvorkommen in Sachsen und Böhmen, deren Bedeutung von allen Kriegsmächten unterschätzt worden war. Stalin jedoch erkannte den strategischen Wert der kleinen Grenzregion. Unter Aufsicht seines Geheimdienstes entstanden in der SBZ/DDR und in der Tschechoslowakischen Republik die beiden größten europäischen Uranbergbaubetriebe. Die Autoren haben für ihre politische Geschichte des Uranbergbaus im Erzgebirge erstmals Quellen aus deutschen, russischen, tschechischen, amerikanischen sowie britischen Archiven ausgewertet und dokumentieren, mit welchen Methoden die Sowjetunion ihre 'Uranlücke' zu schließen vermochte.…

In the course of rearmament, Austria's 'Anschluss', and the company's heavy involvement in the exploitation of oil fields in countries occupied by the Wehrmacht, DEA regained its position as Germany's largest oil corporation. During the Second World War, DEA operations relied on thousands of slave labourers both inside and outside Germany. The present volume is a follow-up project to the analysis given in 'Expansion at all costs.
