Paperback. Condición: New. Glasgow's rapid industrial development in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries left a legacy of unemployment and cramped housing. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the Gorbals area, just south of the river Clyde. The area, as a point of entry to one of the UK's most industrially prolific c…ities, has a broad significance both locally and nationally; and given the range of ethnic groups which have settled in the area over the last 200 years, it is central to the UK and Scotland's history of international relations. Since the Gorbals area was established in the nineteenth century, numerous efforts have been made to clean it up. The most recent initiative has involved the demolition of the infamous, monolithic 1960s tower blocks, and their replacement with modern, low-rise flats. As this third crack at regeneration comes to a close, 20 artists have been allowed in past the Gorbals' tough exterior, to work with the architects, developers and community in creating permanent and temporary projects relevant to the area. "Arcade Artists and Place-making" is a documentation by artists, academics, architects, writers and lay commentators of the work surrounding the regeneration of the Gorbals. The book addresses some of the issues that arose during this project, and looks at the work of participating artists - a fascinating exchange that provides insight into the paradigm shifts happening in architecture and public art practise in general. The book appeals to anyone involved with such schemes, such as artists, arts commissioning agencies, architects and urban planners, as well as those with a more general interest in art, culture, and recent UK history, particularly in the context of Scotland as this is a landmark project for Glasgow's urban landscape. "Arcade Artists and Place-making" is essential reading for anyone interested in art regeneration and consultation processes that inform the redevelopment of so much contemporary urbanism.

Very Good in Wrappers. 9780804012218. 232 pages. hardcover. keywords: Biography & Autobiography Cultural, Ethnic & Regional General. DESCRIPTION - When a stack of pulpy paperback novel…s written by her long-dead father landed on Julia McKenzie Munemo's kitchen table, she-a white woman-had been married to a black man from Zimbabwe for six years and their first son was a toddler. Her alarm at the covers, which promised interracial pornography set during slavery-some of it even taking place in Africa-was matched only by her shame about her father's secret career. All she'd previously known about him was that he'd suffered from depression and delusions and had killed himself when she was five. So she did what she always did with details about her dad, and hid the books from herself, and from her growing mixed-race family. But then, a decade later, when police shootings of African American men were more and more in the public eye, she realized that understanding her own legacy seemed like the only way to begin to understand what was happening in her country. The Book Keeper is equal parts love story, family interrogation, and racial reckoning as Munemo comes to terms with her whiteness, and with her history. inventory #44918.

Hardback. Condición: New. In a memoir that's equal parts love story, investigation, and racial reckoning, Munemo unravels and interrogates her whiteness, a shocking secret, and her family's history. When interracial romance novels written by her long-dead father landed on Julia McKenzie Munemo's kitchen table, she-a white woman-…had been married to a black man for six years and their first son was a toddler. Out of shame about her father's secret career as a writer of "slavery porn," she hid the books from herself, and from her growing mixed-race family, for more than a decade. But then, with police shootings of African American men more and more in the public eye, she realized that understanding her own legacy was the only way to begin to understand her country.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. "A fiercely felt memoir about family shame and the transformative power of love even as it's also an ongoing meditation on privilege and race in twenty-first-century America. This is a debut striking in its empathetic imagination, observational acuity, and emotional intelligence." -- Jim She…pard, author of Like You'd Understand, Anyway. In a memoir that's equal parts love story, investigation, and racial reckoning, Munemo unravels and interrogates her whiteness, a shocking secret, and her family's history. When interracial romance novels written by her long-dead father landed on Julia McKenzie Munemo's kitchen table, she--a white woman--had been married to a black man for six years and their first son was a toddler. Out of shame about her father's secret career as a writer of "slavery porn," she hid the books from herself, and from her growing mixed-race family, for more than a decade. But then, with police shootings of African American men more and more in the public eye, she realized that understanding her own legacy was the only way to begin to understand her country. Decades after Julia McKenzie Munemo's father committed suicide, she learned that he made his living writing interracial pornography under a pseudonym. She hid the stack of his old paperbacks from her Zimbabwean husband, their mixed-race children, and herself before realizing her obligation to understand her racial legacy.
