This important study, the first…re-assessment of Restoration portraiture in nearly twenty years, explores the way in which these women were represented in some of the most beautiful and fascinating portraits of the period. The court of Charles II was a focus for exuberance, glamor and revelry after the constraints of the Civil War and Interregnum. Portraits, both literary and visual, were a significant part of the cultural production at court, reflecting the spirit of the age as much as the characteristics of the individuals portrayed. The magnificent oil paintings of court women are some of the most sumptuous of all works of art, produced in great numbers, displayed in all important houses and collected assiduously both in Britain and abroad. Portraits produced in other media catered for different requirements; the development of the print market satisfied a wider demand, and exquisite portrait miniatures provided intimate, private images. Painted Ladies contains essays by an international group of distinguished scholars who explore the cultural contect of the Restoration court, sexual politics and the role of women at court, the making and meaning of women's portraiture. These are supported by a catalogue of 120 works in different media.
