His 1902 monograph "Contribution à l'étude des affections connues sous le nom d'actinomycose: actinobacillose" (Buenos Aires/Paris, co-authored with G. Spitz) provided the first clear description of actinobacillosis ("maladie de la langue de bois") as a distinct disease entity and led to the isolation of its etiologic agent, later named 'Actinobacillus lignieresii' in his honor.
