L'auteur, à ne pas confondre avec le magistrat Joseph-Philippe-Étienne Rey, était son quasi contemporain. Véritable « enfant du siècle », Joseph Auguste Rey est né le 13 janvier 1800 à Grenoble. Il passa son enfance dans cette ville. Il fit ses études au lycée de Grenoble, puis, après quelques années d?hésitation, s?inscrivit à la faculté de droit, se destinant à la profession d?avocat. Le pouvoir central, saisissant le prétexte de manifestation d?étudiants en 1821, décida la fermeture de la faculté. Il prit la diligence pour rejoindre Paris et dans son journal, décrivit la vie des étudiants à Paris, de 1821 à 1823. After the second restoration of Louis XVIII in July 1815, his republican fervour cost him his position, and he soon founded "L'Union", a secret anti-monarchist society which agitated for the fall of the Bourbons - the first secret republican society in France (cf. Rochas, Biographie du Dauphiné II, 343f.). Active from 1816 to 1820, its members were forced into exile for their participation in the failed republican plot of Saint-Denis in 1820.
