Bholaram, father of Lokesh, took the letter he received to Radharaman who also received a similar letter. The letters informed them that Lokesh and Tridev who were sent on a mission, did not return. Bholaram could not suppress his sorrow and slipped as he stepped out; he was admitted to Ashutosh nursing home. Ashutosh received a letter that Niranjan left the camp but did not return. Ashutosh buried the letter and its contents deep within himself. Bharatram convinced both sides for the marriage of Lucy and Omkar. First they were married according to Christian rites and later according to the Hindu rites. The war ended as suddenly as it began. Lokesh and Tridev returned soon after the war and related how they were wounded and how a Muslim Lady doctor treated them and returned them to the Indian Army Camp. In 1947 when the doctor's family was migrating to Pakistan, an orthodox Brahmin protected them, gave them shelter and treated them as honored guests for three days; that gesture changed the lives and attitudes of the Muslim family and they began helping people in need, irrespective of their religion or nationality. Their story profoundly influenced the residents of Devipur. There was no means of getting any news about Niranjan; his parents felt miserable. Because Lucy was also assisting in running the nursing home, Ashutosh gave up active practice. Niranjan was taken a war prisoner and was selected to be returned to India under an Indo-Pak agreement for exchange of some prisoners. At the last minute someone else was smuggled in his place and he was thrown out to die. A Muslim school teacher saved him, nursed him to health and married him. Later, he wrote a cryptic letter to Ashutosh indicating how they can be retrieved and brought to Devipur. Ashutosh's wife Sarvani deciphers the letter and they succeed in bringing the couple to Devipur with the help of a Collector from each side of the border. One evening, a daily wage earner Limar, mistook him for her husband Mirak whom he resembled closely and forced him to follow her to their home. They spent the night together. With the permission of the government, he began to chase Arohga's trail and finally was able to locate him at the demonstration. They met in Arohga's office. He disclosed everything to Nomis who tried to record it secretly. That office was equipped to prevent electronic recording of sound or picture within that office! Limar happened to hear Arohga describe how he caused the death of Mirak. She contacted Nomis and obtained all information he knew about Arohga. He guessed that Limar met Nomis. Arohga supplemented her with other details of his version of his life and the kind of life he had been leading after marrying her. He left the choice of punishing him or pardoning him entirely to her discretion. After careful thought she concluded that 1. He was not guilty of committing any crime directly, 2. The purpose of punishment was reforming the individual; when the individual reformed himself and was living a pious life, there was no longer any need to punish him. Nomis persevered, gathered further proof and confronted Arohga and Limar and almost convinced her. In the background of the fast fading darkness the swift changing sceneries looked beautiful. He realized that all colors and beauty were illusory. He remembered Umapathy telling him that one could reach salvation through such illusions; he did not quite understand. He went to Umapathy for clarification. He saw how exhausted Saradhy was. Both had their breakfast and rested on easy chairs; soon Saradhy dozed off. On another occasion Saradhy asked Umapathy how upasana of beauty could lead to salvation when beauty itself was an illusion. Umapathy gave a lucid explanation of how upasana of beauty can give deeper happiness transcending physical senses. He also explained in detail Savikalpa Samadhi and Nirvikalpa Samadhi. Saradhy struggled but failed to achieve detachment. By yoga, he transferred to Kireeti what attracted Vasanthi, got her married to him and moved away from them. He was addicted to drama and continued to give performances even as he changed religions and moved from place to place. Saradhy was performing in their town a drama in which Vasanthi played the heroine earlier. She requested him to permit her play that role again; he stoutly refused. She convinced the day's heroine and replaced her after the drama commenced. In a situation in the drama, they embraced each other.
