Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. "African Literature Today 15" was published in 1987 in Trenton New York by Africa World Press. On the rear cover are found the following Excerpts : "The book is devoted to African women writers and to the presentation of women in African literature. This is a recognition of two important facts. Firstly, that African women writers, as a number of articles show, have been neglected in male-authored studies and journals. Secondly, that the last ten years or so have at last, despite all sociological factors against them, shown a blossoming of accomplished works by African women writers. "Molara Ogundipe-Leslie has discussed provocatively the issue of 'commitment' to the need to counter misconceptions about the role of women. Mariama Bâ, Aminata Sow Fall, and Ama Ata Aidoo have extended the range of concerns in the African novel with the coverage of such issues as polygamy, marriage, love, and the relations between the sexes. Will the woman writer be free in the future to follow her own creative impulse and, like any author, write about what she pleases?" CONTENTS : ** Editorial ** The Female Writer and Her Commitment - by Molara Ogundipe-Leslie ** Women Without Men : The Feminist Novel in Africa - by Katherine Frank ** Mother Africa on a Pedestal : The Male Heritage in African Literature and Criticism - by Minecke Schipper ** Feminist Issues in the Fiction of Kenya's Female Writers - by Jean F. O'Barr ** The Didactic Essence of Efua Sutherland's Plays - by Adetokunbo Pearce ** Bessie Head - A Question of Power and Identity - by Charles Ponnuthurai Sarvan ** Contemporary Society and the Female Imagination : A Study of the Novels of Mariama Bâ - by Mbye B. Cham ** Dreams of a Common Language : Nadine Gordimer's "July's People" - by Jennifer Gordon ** Amata Aidoo and the Oral Tradition : A Paradox of Form and Substance - by Arlene Elder ** Images of Women in Wole Soyinka's Work - by Sylvia Bryan ** Women and Resistance in Ngugi's "Devil on the Cross" - by Jennifer Evans ** The House of Slavery - by Adewale Maja-Pearce ** The Afro-American-West African Marriage Question : Its Literary and Historical Contexts - by Brenda F. Berrian SERIES : African Literature Today (15) TITLE : Women in African Literature Today EDITORS : Eldred Durosimi Jones, Eustace Palmer, and Marjorie Jones IMPRINT : Africa World Press PLACE : Trenton, NJ DATE : (1987) EDITION : First Edition STATUS : Op - Out of Print PHYSICAL DETAILS : Serial Publication issued in Trade Paperback Format; contains an Introduction (Editorial), notes and an Index; 162 pages; 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"; printed wraps, glued.
