Removed from "The People's Pictorial Atlas", p.18. A color map, an "updated" reissue of the map used in the Henry Darwin Rogers and Alexander Keith Johnston 1857 "Atlas of the United States", published in London by Edward Stanford. An "unusual collaboration between a Scot (Johnston), an American (Rogers), and an Englishman (Stanford). The maps are all on a scale of 54.5 miles to one inch, and are very well executed. They are derived from the large Map of The United States, British & Central America, by Rogers and Johnston, 1857. The western U.S. maps show the routes of the proposed Pacific Railroad.Johnston engraved and drew the maps - these maps are perhaps the best examples of Scottish highly detailed mapmaking applied to the western territories and states, in the pre civil war period. The only other example is Black's Atlas of North America, published in 1856, but not quite as detailed in the western states and territories." (see Rumsey collection). This 1873 "updated reprint", "highly detailed" has some interesting errors - some details are correct in 1857 but more precise or not true in 1873 . For example, Mt. Shasta in named "Shasta Butte" and said to be "17,600 ft." in elevation; the mining town Aurora is placed in California - that was true in 1857 but in 1863 it had been federally determined to be in Nevada. The left edge somewhat ragged from removal, margins a little toned, but a colorful, Very Good copy.
