Hardcover. Condición: Fine. First edition. First edition. A fine, bright copy. Hardcover in forest green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt. Top edge gilt. 169 pp. Frontispiece with captioned tissue guard and eleven additional illustrations by John Sloan. Collection of popular poetry by T.A. (Thomas Augustine) Daly (1871-1948)…, an Irish-American author from Philadelphia, whose parents opened the first Catholic bookshop in the city. In his journalism and poetry as well as in his speaking engagements he often used various dialects. As this gradually fell out of favor, so did his writings. More importantly, this collection , as well as his earlier "Canzoni", were illustrated by John Sloan. Sloan (1871-1951) began his art career while working as assistant cashier for the Philadelphia Publisher and bookseller Porter & Coates, where he sold some of his earliest etchings. His commercial career commenced when became a staff illustrator of the Philadelphia Inquirer and later te Philadelphia Press. In 1904, Sloan and his wife moved to New York City, where he produced some of his most famous paintings. Sloan is credited, along with Robert Henri, with launching a new form of realist impressionism that came to be known as the "Ashcan School". The illustrations in this book are clearly in that style. John Sloan (ilustrador).
