Paperback. Condición: New. William Blake (1757-1827), hailed as 'the glorious luminary' by William Rossetti, is one of the great mystics in the history of Western art. His hallucinatory paintings, watercolours and, in particular, the illustrations he made for his books of poetry are instantly recognisable, and have inspired generations of artists in his wake. Although he was largely ignored by his contemporaries, or derided as mad, a number of perceptive critics and commentators took great interest in both the man and his work. This volume brings together some of the most illuminating writings by people who knew Blake, and brings this astonishing visionary to life. They include the frank appraisal by the hugely perceptive diarist Crabb Robinson, never before published in full in English, and the first full biography by Blake's friend and fellow artist John Thomas Smith, as well as Alexander Gilchrist's Preliminary, which heralded the arrival of Blake in the 19th Century.…

Soft cover. Condición: Good. Here is a single issue of "The Bookman" : Volume LXIV, No. 3, November 1926. There is always something of interest to be found in old issues of "The Bookman" - often many such somethings. In this issue is the First Appearance of a travel piece by Aldous Huxley ("Diary of an Eastern Journey"). Various authors have pieces on H. G. Wells (by a young Floyd Dell), Ellen Glasgow, Somerset Maugham, Edgar Allan Poe's Parents, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. There is a poem by Henry Morton Robinson - and poems by several others. To say that this issue reviews the then current literature is an understatement. This copy is in rough condition, with numerous imperfections, but it is complete, clean and intact in original wraps, and quite serviceable. (See below for our condition report) . CONTENTS : -- The Point of View (Editorial) -- On Parting with a Favorite Author - by Hugh Walpole -- Ellen Glasgow : Citizen of the World - by Dorothea Lawrence Mann (with a Silhouette by Julie Brown) --The Goddess Yesandno - by Bartlett Cormack -- The Shirt - a Story by Genevieve Taggard (With Sketches by Lydia Gibson) -- Public Women in Married Life - by June Lucas -- The Dramatic Careers of Poe's Parents - by Eola Willis -- Diary of an Eastern Journey - by Aldous Huxley (This is the First Appearance of this work by Huxley) -- The Somerset Maugham of "The Casuarina Tree" - by Grant Overton (with a portrait of Maugham by Bertrand Zadig) -- A Little Girl's Utopia - by George Shelton Hubbell -- The Sun in Splendour - Conclusion of a Serialized Novel by Thomas Burke. -- Longfellow's Golden Years - by Herbert S. Gorman -- The Londoner - by Simon Pure --Mr. Wells Makes a Great Experiment - by Floyd Dell ( This is the First Appearance of this work by Dell ) -- The New Yorker - by Larry Barretto -- The Bookman's Guide to Fiction -- The Editor Recommends - by John Farrar -- A Shelf of Recent Books - Reviews by Arthur Bartlett Maurice, Stephen Graham, William R. Langfeld, Blanche Colton Williams, and Charles W. Ferguson -- The Seven Seas - by Michael Joseph -- Poems by Henry Morton Robinson and various others TITLE : The Bookman ISSUE : Volume LXIV, No. 3 DATE : November 1926 EDITOR : John Farrar CONTRIBUTING AUTHORS : Aldous Huxley, Floyd Dell, Hugh Walpole, Genevieve Taggard, Grant Overton, Henry Morton Robinson, et al IMPRINT : George H. Doran PLACE : New York City DETAILS : Contains numerous illustrations (including ads); volume pages 257 - 384 (128 pages) + LVI (56) pages of front and back material ; 6 1/2" x 9 1/2", printed greenish-blue wraps with black lettering ( held together by glue & thread ) CONDITION -- GOOD ONLY --This is a previously owned periodical that is in rough condition, else complete and serviceable, with the following details noted :: EXTERIOR : The spine is creased and cracked, with considerable loss of paper at the extremities (more so at the top). One can see that there has been mending effected to the spine surface and joints (which were cracked). Cover edges are considerably worn, with chipping, nicks, tears, and small loss. The front cover surface is fairly clear, while the back cover has weathering, mild staining and what seems to be a bit of foxing. Text-block edges are darkened. BINDING : One can easily see that the binding has been mended at its hinges, however, while the leaves open widely, no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR : Scattered foxing and or spotting (most obviously on those leaves closest to the covers); weathering along the edges; soft bumps to corner tips, with dog-eared tips scattered through. Paper is toned. There are a few pencil erasures, else the interior is free of marking. As I said above, the issue is rough but quite serviceable.…
