Printed on robust watermarked wove paper. This magnificent plate depicts the celebrated racehorse Antonio, winner of the 1819 St. Leger Stakes (Fifty Subscribers). Antonio was owned by Thomas Ferguson, Esq., trained by J. Ferguson, and ridden to victory by jockey John Lonsdale—marking Lonsdale's historic third consecutive winning ride in this prestigious race. Having moved to Doncaster in 1814, his passion for racing was ignited by witnessing "William" win the St. Leger. Print Sz: 16 1/2"H x 20 1/2"W Frame Sz: 24 1/2"H x 28 1/4"W Published by S & J Fuller Aquatint engraving by Mr. Sutherland Barefoot (1820-1840) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for winning a chaotic and controversial race for the classic St Leger Stakes in 1823. Bred and originally trained in Yorkshire, Barefoot was beaten on his debut but began a seven race winning sequence when successful in a minor race at Pontefract in September 1822. As a three-year-old he was unbeaten in five starts including the Spring St Leger at York and the Great St Leger at Doncaster. In the latter event, he finished second in a race which was declared void after a false start before winning a re-run. Barefoot was later sold to William Vane, 1st Duke of Cleveland and competed for three further seasons with mixed results, his best efforts being wins in the Lancaster Gold Cups of 1825 and 1826. After his retirement from racing he was exported to the United States where he had limited success as a sire of winners before dying as a result of a snake bite in 1840.…

Only able to locate one other copy in the National Library of Wales, but is unhelpful as they do not list number of pages, plates or date. The only item of news is they list the illustrators as J. F Herring (John Frederick), 1795-1865.; Edwin Landseer Sir, 1802-1873. & E. T. Smith. Although only noticed one with E. T. Smith signed within plate, Undated but found it listed for sale in an ad in the Athenaeum in 1883, Warne's Excelsior Playmates series seems to be from the 1860's to 1890's, and as is often with this type of rare undated books, it could have been published and printed in the 1870s and advertised & held in stock by publishers and or bookshops for over 20 years until sold. But as so little on the net about this title, we cannot say if this book is complete or not, even the layout is not exactly the same throughout. So only one copy located in the National Library of Wales (not in BL). So not even sure if complete, not a good copy, this is just a very rare children's title, with only one copy listed on Google (in an institution) and no other copy for sale at time of listing. Añadir al carritoLarge folio (60 x 42 cm). Letterpress title with engraved vignette, list of subscribers, winners of the St. Leger 1776-1814, 14 hand-coloured aquatint plates by T. Sutherland and R. G. Reeve after Herring, each with letterpress description of riders and winners of other races and the St Leger stakes for each year. Bound in recent half burgundy morocco with contemporary drab boards with large printed label on upper cover. "Extremely rare" (Tooley). Second edition of Herring's finest work, the outcome of his fascination with horse racing and the St. Leger in particular. "In the writer's estimation, the first series of the St. Leger winners contains the very best of Herring prints [.] they were engraved by Sutherland, a more competent aquatinter and colourist than his successors who handled these race-horses" (Siltzer). Herring spent the first 18 years of his life in London, where his father, an American, was a fringe-maker in Newgate Street. Having married against his father's wishes, he went to Doncaster, where he arrived during the races in September 1814, and saw the Duke of Hamilton's horse, William, win the St. Leger. The sight inspired him to attempt the art of animal-painting, in which he subsequently excelled. He painted Filho da Puta, the winner of the St. Leger in 1815, and for the following thirty-two years painted each winner in succession. "Herring's series of Portraits [.] were painted annually and quickly reproduced in large showy aquatints, the horses made literally glossy by the application of varnish to the paper" (Diana Donald, Picturing Animals in Britain 1750-1850, New Haven, CT [2007], p. 215). This is the second edition of this series of wonderful racehorse portraits. It was first published as a suite of 10 plates in 1824 by Sheardown and Son of Doncaster; S. and J. Fuller of London purchased these in 1827 and continued to publish, periodically, the St. Leger winner series up to 1845. The earlier plates were all re-captioned with Fuller's imprint. Plates watermarked 1825-28; the first plate in the present work, "Filho da Puta", is on paper watermarked 1827. - Very slight offsetting to text. Extremities rubbed; otherwise a superb example of this rare work. - Siltzer 139-146. Mellon Horsemanship, 128.…

Añadir al carritoNo Binding. Condición: Very Good. Image is 31.5 cm x 41 cm . 38,5 cm x 52 cm within indent. 45 cm x 53 cm is the sheet size. Aquatint is loose and not stuck down. Beautifully hand coloured with exquisite detail in horse and jockey. Very slight wear to background in sky, hardly noticeable and not affecting the central image. Print is clean and without foxing, marks, or tears. In a solid wooden frame with brass corners. I cannot send this print in the glass and sending out of frame will be much cheaper. This magnificent portrait of St. Patrick, Sir E. Smith's celebrated racehorse who won the Great St. Leger Stakes in 1820, is considered one of Herring's most accomplished sporting portraits. Herring is an outstanding and imaginative artist who at an early age showed an aptitude for handling both riding whip and pencil. At a young age, fate took Herring to the Doncaster races where he saw the Duke of Hamilton's horse, William, win the St. Leger. The sight inspired him to attempt the art of animal-painting, in which he subsequently excelled. In addition to being a successful horse painter, Herring made his livelihood as a coachman, and for some time drove the Highflyer coach between London and York. When eventually he retired as a coachman he immediately obtained numerous commissions and was able to devote himself entirely to his art. Herring had no education in art until he definitely set up as an artist, when he worked for a short time in the studio of Abraham Cooper, R.A. He painted an immense number of racing, coaching, and other sporting subjects, many of which were published by the sporting printsellers and the sporting magazines. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists; he was elected a member of the latter society in 1841. While in later life he painted a number of subject-pictures, it was as a portrait-painter of racehorses that Herring earned his fame, and no great breeder or owner of racehorses is without some treasured production of Herring's brush. In 1825 The Doncaster Gazette commissioned Herring to paint a series of portraits of the winners of the St. Leger Stakes between 1815 and 1824. Aquatinted by the renowned engraver Thomas Sutherland, the series is considered to be Herring's most accomplished work.…

A rare work with beautiful horse plates and detailed information.l Cf. Podeschi 128 (1824 ed. with different title, with 10 plates plus extra plate for 1825); Siltzer 139-146 (various eds.). Contemporary plain boards with publisher's printed label wrapper-title on front board (with same wording and vignette as title-page, but partly reset and with a border of cast fleurons). Rebacked with burgundy half morocco and matching corners. With engraved vignette on the letterpress title-page, 14 hand-coloured aquatint plates by T. Sutherland and R. G. Reeve after Herring, each with information on a separate letterpress leaf. Pages: [17] ll. plus plates.…
