Written while Kean was on an American theatrical tour, the fragment reads 'I remain, | Yours truly | [signed] Charles Kean | Aster House | 9th. June | 1846.' First edition. xi,[i],415,[1]pp. With hand-coloured frontispiece and three etched black and white plates by John Leech. §The author's brother MAURICE BERKELEY's (1788-1867) copy with his bold ink signature to front free endpaper. There was bad blood between the disputatious Grantley Berkeley, sportsman & bully, and his siblings. In his 'Memoirs' (1865), he dredged up the dubious circumstances of his mother's 1795 marriage to the Earl of Berkeley - a secret marriage amidst allegations that the Earl had actually bought his bride from her elder sister. Grantley Berkeley's motive appears to have derived from little more than a desire to antagonise his brothers, who responded with a printed denial in the form of the 1866 pamphlet 'Reply to Some Passages in a Book entitled "My Life and Recollections, By the Hon. Grantley F. Berkeley." By the Other Surviving Sons of the Late Earl and Countess of Berkeley' : a pamphlet generally attributed to Maurice Berkeley, only. Nineteenth-century ink ownership name regrettably erased from head of title-page to the point of illegibility; the residue of the name looks of similar date to Maurice Berkeley's signature and may have been that of another family member (this is speculation). Several facetious manuscript comments to text in pencil or blue pencil, and one in ink, in one or more nineteenth-century hands. The annotator(s) clearly read the text with a closely critical eye and one is probably Maurice Berkeley. Rebound in black late nineteenth-century half calf, slightly cropping one of the manuscript annotations (see illustration), pebbled cloth boards (latter showing some discolouration), gilt lettering and decoration (title misspelled on spine). Some general light internal soiling and occasional foxing. Loosely inserted is a slip of paper with pencilled note in one of the same hands, mentioning a sporting painting 'The Death of the Fox' depicting Earl Fitzhardinge, the Hon. Craven Berkeley, and others, seemingly left at a framer's. Touch of rubbing to covers and short external split to 1 cm. of external upper joints - hence the top of the spine is a little fragile and needs gentle handling, but covers otherwise perfectly sturdy. The text is on one side of a 13 x 16 cm piece of laid watermarked paper. The signature 'J. Kemble' is at bottom left, in slightly-darker ink than the fifteen lines of text. Lightly aged and with short closed tears at edges of two folds. Slight traces of brown-paper mount at top corners on reverse, which carries a capable ink drawing of 'the Caducean Trident' mentioned in the text: a dragon with two sets of wings, body stiff as a rod, encircled by two snakes. The text, which has a few deletions and interpolations indicating original composition, may refer to a prop required for a dramatic production by Kemble. It reads: 'Albion, having accepted from his cousin Mercury, God of Commerce, his original Caduceus, and, from his father, Neptune, his original Trident, requested of Vulcan to new mould them, making the two into one badge of sovereign authority, symbolical of commercial supremacy and marine dominion. In compliance with this request, Vulcan produced the Caducean Trident. The Dragon is the symbol of a military marine; vigilant, swift, terrible and potent; and the Serpents are the types of the sagacity, address and prudence of Commerce, which is the source and foundation of naval power; and therefore this symbolical sceptre of Albion is in a tridental form, well at [sic] its lower as well as its upper extremity.'. …

2pp., 4to. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Divided into eight four-line stanzas, each with the same two-line refrain. The first stanza: 'Fashion was formed when the World began, | And Adam I am told was a very smart man, | As for Eve I shall say nothing more or less. | |But that Ladies of Fashion now copy her dress. | Yet barring all pother of this that & tother we all bow to Fashion in turn'. Containing witty references to the fashion for hunting boots and crops, New Bond Street, Tudor and Stuart clothing, Whigs and Tories. The poem appears to have been popular, as it was printed in various collections: attributed to Dibdin in 'Thespian Gleanings' (Ulverston, 1805) and printed anonymously in 'The Theatrical Banquet' (London, 1809), 'The Syren' (Newcastle: David Bass, 1816) and 'The Roundelay' (Doncaster: Thomas and Hunsley, n.d.), all with variations including the absence of the seventh stanza (about 'The Fashion of Fighting'), and the line 'And their Shoes were turn'd up like a Critical Nose;' printed as 'And their shoes were square toed, yellow worsted their hose.' Possibly written during the Peace of Amiens in 1802-1803, as the seventh stanza states that 'Peace is the fashion'. Although it is likely that the manuscript is in Dibdin's hand, comparison with an 1838 letter by him is inconclusive; the later hand is tighter and smaller, while this manuscript is a larger fair hand copy. Dibdin reminds Davidge that at his 'first Anniversary Dinner' he expressed a great wish to serve Dibdin by his patronage, but that 'absence from Town' prevented him. 'The Company were so well pleas'd that each present sign'd a Paper to come again - it is now fix'd for my Birthday (the 21st. Inst) and I take the freedom of enclosing you a List of the Patrons in the Hope I may be allow'd to add yours and enclose you a Ticket'. The cost is 'One Guinea each Transferable - Half presented to me & for the other Half the Landlord gives a very good Dinner and a Bottle of Wine & Desert'. Dibdin invites Davidge's 'Commands', 'in Memory of Auld lang Syne' (Davidge was lessee of the Coburg and Surrey Theatres). The list names more than eighty individuals in alphabetical order, beginning with 'The Hon. Edd. Byng', and including 'Chas. Kemble Esqre', 'S. Sheridan Knowles Esq', 'Rt. Hon. Lord Tenterden', 'Rt. Hon. Earl Waldegrave' and three Members of Parliament.…

Two pages (one leaf),18.5 x 14cms, left edge showing signs of being tipped on to something, text mainly clear and apparently complete, as follows: " Mr Charles Kemble begs to return the best Thanks of the Committee of Management to Mr Thelwall for the kind offer of the occasional Address, which they would gladly have had receited if they were not convinced by experience, of the total want of attraction in similar productions - They think, however, it might be of great service to the cause which it advocates, were it to be inserted previously to the Benefit in the daily Papers as powerful stimulants are necessary to induce the public to attend the Theatre on this occasion - the receipts of Drury Lane and the Lyceum upon the nights 'devoted' to the irish peasantry [sic], sufficiently testify this. The Committee fully appreciate the motives of Mr Thelwall, and for this, as well as for the disinterested offer of his future services are much indebted to him." Note: a.
