Small stains to text block's toned top edge; lesser stains to fore-edge and bottom edge. Slight toning/foxing and soiling to initial and rear leaves; interior pages remain mostly clean. Binding is firm. B/w decorations (i.e. chapter headpiece illustrations) by J. Allen St. John. The publication date is estimated but most likely 1929. There is no top stain to the text block & a closed ampersand in G&D at the bottom of the spine & an ad in the rear with…28 ERB titles. The DJ is from 1929 with a synopsis of the book on the front flap, a square picture of ERB at the upper left of the rear panel with a list of 28 ERB titles below, and a list of 25 ERB titles on the reverse. The DJ illustration is by N C Wyeth. The chapter heading illustrations are by J Allen St John. The book is in very good shape with bright red boards and sharp black lettering. The DJ illustration is clean and sharp with some light rubbing to the front panel. There is light edge wear with small loss a the top & bottom of the spine. There is a thumbnail sized sticker scrape at the bottom left of the front panel. A good to very good copy of an early Tarzan reprint. N C Wyeth (DJ), J Allen St John (chapter headings) (ilustrador).

Ink ownership inscription and name/address label on front pastedown; partially peeled remnant of Greenwood, Mississippi retail store (Fountain's Big Busy Store) price sticker affixed at front free endpaper's top right corner. B/w decorations (i.e. chapter headpiece illustrations) by J. Allen St. John. A few scattered light brown stains to interior pages which, overall, remain quite clean. Binding is firm. Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. Octavo. xix, 534 pages, John Allen Wyeth (1845-1922) joined the Confederate Cavalry of Nathan Bedford Forest, CWB, I, 183. He was taken prisoner in October 1863 and released in April 1865. He studied medicine under Dr. James M. Jackson of Guntersville, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Louisville in 186…9 and received further training at Bellevue Medical College. He founded the New York Polyclinic Medical School then went back "to record from personal observation something of the social, economic and political conditions which prevailed in the South before, during and immediately after the Civil War." Wyeth describes Southern life, particularly in Alabama, touching on issues of education, social class, abolition, and slavery; his writing style includes both vignettes and short opinionated essays. Following a discussion of antebellum politics. Wyeth also tells of his experiences during the Civil War as a scout patrol of a detachment of Morgan's Cavalry. The text continues with a discussion of Wyeth's career as a doctor and concludes with his family's genealogy. Map of the Battle of Chickamauga. Bound in red cloth spine lettered and decorated in silver and gilt, light wear to spine ends and corners. A very nice copy.
