The essays in this volume highlight the ways that ancient Near Eastern iconography can inform exegesis. This aim is accompli…shed through case studies in iconographic exegesis that exhibit sound methodologies for relating images and texts.Since the 1970s, biblical scholars have been turning increasingly to iconography as a source for understanding the religion, history and literature of the ancient Near East. The essays in this volume tackle two thorny issues: 1) how images reflect the cultures that produce them and 2) the nature of the relationship between images and texts, both within discrete cultures and among different cultures. Until now, there have been relatively few methodologically self-conscious treatments of ancient iconography and its relationship to the biblical text. So this volume addresses a clear need for demonstrating transparent and consistent methods for iconographic work among biblical scholars.

The scholars argue about the background and the meaning of the picture with the arguments that it 1. compares the Israelite deity to a bird, 2. points to the winged sun disk, 3. uses Egyptian symbols for protection, 4. t…he picture of winged ones Goddesses conjured up or 5th to the winged cherubim in the temple or on the ark. These various arguments illustrate the need for a clearer way to interpret biblical images in the context of Middle Eastern art. This volume further develops the iconographic methods by looking at the image of the winged Yahweh in the middle of the literary images of a psalm. Various overlaps with Syro-Palestinian iconographic material can be discovered. These overlaps include: 1) the winged sun disk, 2) the Horus falcon, 3) winged suckling goddesses, 4) winged deities in battle. There is not a single idea behind the picture of the winged Yahweh. The winged Yahweh is an excellent example of a multi-layered literary image that is reminiscent of several iconographic motifs. The striking image of the winged Yahweh occurs in six psalms. This volume refines iconographic methodologies by treating the image of the winged Yahweh as one among a constellation of literary images in each psalm.
