Der Irakkrieg im Jahr 2003 war der dritte illegale Krieg der Vereinigten Staaten in nur vier Jahren, wobei der Krieg gegen Saddam besonders blutig und eklatant rechtswidrig war. Die USA konnten keine moralische Rechtfertigung für ihre Invasion liefern. Die UN-Waffeninspektoren hatten keine Massenvernichtungswaffen gefunden. Die Amerikaner und die Briten, die vor dem Krieg versuchten, die Inspektionen mit gefälschten Geheimdiensterkenntnissen in Misskredit zu bringen, haben auch nach dem Krieg nichts entdecken können. Da nicht zu befürchten war, dass der Irak die USA oder einen deren Verbündeten angreifen würde, gab es auch keinen glaubwürdigen Anspruch der Alliierten auf Selbstverteidigung. Und wer anfangs noch glaubte, es ginge bei diesem Krieg um die Befreiung der Iraker, wurde sehr bald eines Besseren belehrt, als nach Saddams Sturz klar wurde, dass es den Irakern schwer fallen dürfte, sich von der fremden Besatzung zu befreien. Auch die Sorge um die Menschenrechte ließ sich als Interventionsmotiv der USA kaum ernst nehmen, die die Iraker zwölf Jahre lang mit inhumanen Sanktionen bestraft hatten. Und wo blieb die Menschlichkeit in einem Krieg, der so viele unschuldige Menschenleben forderte? Den Kosovokrieg rechtfertigten die USA als humanitäre Intervention, den Afghanistankrieg als Selbstverteidigung und für den Irakkrieg behaupteten sie, durch den UN-Sicherheitsrat autorisiert zu sein. Jeder dieser Kriege muss nach Völkerrecht und UN-Charta als größtes internationales Verbrechen eingestuft werden. Aber wie kommt es, dass es nicht gelingt, die USA vor internationalen Kriegsverbrechertribunalen zur Verantwortung zu ziehen, sondern dass nur die Gegner der USA für ihre Taten büßen müssen?
