Añadir al carritoHard Cover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition Thus. Originally Published in 1928 by, and reprinted with the permission of, The Johns Hopkins Press. Stated at copyright page: "First Greenwood Reprinting 1969." Dark grey cloth boards, gilt stamped spine titles, light shelf, corner wear. Pages near fine, clean. Small circular own…er's blindstamped emblem at title page with initials at center: "Scott Dehart, SMD." Bind fine, square; hinges intact. Scarce near very good first edition thus from the Greenwood Press. "A very interesting volume, interesting to the reader as a model for his own 'commonplace' book perhaps, or for its rich commentary upon certain phases of life and men's activity as well as for its illuminating outlining of the personality of Thomas Jefferson" - Boston Transcript. Text in English with Latin and Greek often adjacent. Includes index of authors, works. Presented here is the Greenwood edition of Thomas Jefferson's literary "commonplace" book; a notebook of his literary and philosophical reading. Unlike the only previous edition, published in 1928, this edition contains full annotation, pertinent information on the varied authors and works commonplaced (excerpts recorded in Jefferson's hand), and a rationale for dating the entries. Features an illustrated essay on Jefferson's handwriting that explains the rationale for assigning approximate dates. With the added approximation of entry dates, it is possible to show that most of the four hundred seven passages were entered when Jefferson was a young man, between the ages of fifteen and thirty. The dating also reflects the range of Jefferson's literary interests from his school days to about the time of his marriage and involvement in politics. As one of the few surviving documents from Jefferson's early years, this collection assumes special importance as a source of insight into the least known period of his life. In the introduction, the editor, Gilbert Chinard presents reasons for thinking that the commonplace book was more to Jefferson than a sampling of great literarature and timeless classics, but was a deeply personal notebook with direct connections to the emotional events and preoccupations of his formative years. In addition to the text and annotation, the book contains a register of authors whose writings were included in Jefferson's notebook. Printed in the United States of America. 210 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.
