Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the phenomena of the Mississippi River, particularly its transportation of solid matter to the sea. The author focuses on the formation of the river's delta, proposing a solution to the problem of the constantly forming sand bars at the river's mouthâ"a problem that has long plagued engineers. The text examines the river's physical composition, its flow, and the dynamics of the evolving delta, providing a comprehensive understanding of the river's behavior. The book delves into the theories and practices of river engineering, critiquing prevailing ideas and offering innovative solutions. It underscores the importance of balancing the forces that control the river's speed and sediment transport capacity to achieve the desired navigability and prevent the formation of obstructive sandbars. Through rigorous analysis and practical insights, this book illuminates the complexities of riverine systems and offers valuable guidance for future river management strategies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

James Buchanan Eads (1820-1887) was an American engineer best known for his triple arch steel bridge over the Mississippi River at St. Louis (constructed in 1874). He was also an inventor who held several patents. During the Civil War he helped construct Ironclad ships for use on the Mississippi. He oversaw the construction of 7 ironclads in 5 months. Scarce.

Paper read at a meeting of the society, May 6, 1885. According to an article printed by the Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District [New Orleans: nd], Capt. James Eads, a civil engineer, inventor and shipbuilder from St. Louis set out to devise a jetty system to deepen and expand the branches of the Mississippi River emptying into the Gulf of Mexico at New Orleans. In 1875, he began construction of the jetties and succeeded in "forcing the river to scour out a deeper channel, reaching a 26-foot-depth by late December 1876. Eads' jetties revived the declining Port of New Orleans and allowed the entire Mississippi Valley to prosper." In this paper Eads defends himself against critics and discusses the merits of his system for constructing jetties to aid in the development of Galveston harbor.
