The poet was a Canadian soldier from Alm…onte, Ontario who was prevented to being on the front lines with the others from his regiment (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry) by a bout with influenza. When he was finally fit for duty, excellent marksman Sergeant Brown was sent to the trenches in France (St. Eloi), where he died on the first day.
