Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Scarce monograph by a pioneer in cardiac transplantation, Jack Copeland. Stapled wraps, 8 7/8 x 5 7/8 inches, pp. 609-672, figured, tables, references. Address label, rear cover. Else fine. (K011) Dr. Jack G. Copeland made profound and pioneering contributions to cardiac transplantation. He is widely recognized as a "rock star" of cardiothoracic surgery and spent over 40 years advancing mechanical circulatory support and organ replacement. His career includes performing over 850 heart transplants and driving innovations that fundamentally changed how end-stage heart failure is treated globally. Key Contributions to Cardiac Surgery and Transplantation. Pioneered "Bridge to Transplant" Technology: In 1985, Dr. Copeland made medical history at the University of Arizona Medical Center by performing the first successful implant of a Total Artificial Heart (the Jarvik-7) to keep a critically ill patient alive until a human donor heart became available. The recipient, Michael Drummond, successfully bridged to a human heart transplant and survived for more than five years. Commercializing the Artificial Heart: He co-founded SynCardia Systems in 2001. SynCardia manufactures the world's only commercially approved temporary Total Artificial Heart, which has since saved thousands of patients waiting for transplants worldwide. Founding the ISHLT: In 1980, Dr. Copeland co-founded the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). He served as one of its first presidents, helping establish the global authority for medical standards in heart failure and transplantation. Surgical Innovation and Techniques: He established complex protocols for repeat heart transplantations, innovations in Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs), and advanced the "piggyback" (heterotopic) heart transplant technique to aid patients with severe pulmonary hypertension who would otherwise not qualify for a standard transplant. Regional and Pediatric Firsts: Dr. Copeland performed Arizona's very first heart transplant in 1979 and later achieved the state's first double-lung transplant. He also spearheaded the first U.S. use of the pediatric "Berlin Heart" assist device. Major Career Awards. Because of his foundational impact, Dr. Copeland has received several of the highest honors in his field, including the Barney Clark Award (2001) for advancements in artificial heart technology and the Pioneer in Transplantation Award (2013) presented by the ISHLT.…
