Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the state of Germany before Martin Luther triggered the Protestant Reformation, focusing on the religious, intellectual, and social landscape. The author provides a detailed account of the widespread availability of printed religious texts, challenging the narrative of widespread illiteracy and ignorance among the German people. In examining the educational opportunities of the time, the book reveals a rich tapestry of grammar schools and universities alongside numerous charitable schools. It also discusses the economic prosperity of Germany, with a significant merchant class and widespread rural wealth. However, the book does not shy away from highlighting the social problems of the era, including excessive luxury, usury, and the questionable behavior of some clergy. The author presents a balanced view, acknowledging both the strengths and weaknesses of German society before Luther's Reformation, offering a nuanced and thought-provoking analysis of this pivotal period in European history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Some friends suggested to me the idea of drawing a portrait of the Prophet of Wittenberg from his own works the prospect of having to devote many months to going through his voluminous and frequently disgusting books was anything but cheerful, but I resolved to carry out the idea, in hope of contributing a little towards vindicating historical truth.'
