Mid brown cloth covered boards with titles on gilt frame surrounded by a leafy branch in green to the front cover and plain spine, attractive School Board for London prize gilt vignette on the rear cover. Condition good, the b…inding is slightly rubbed at the edges otherwise very nice. There is foxing to the title page, contents page and first 3 text pages and also the last four text pages, the margins of the last colour plate and the publisher's advertisements and rear end-paper. The rest of the contents are quite clean, there is the odd spot or two to the margins of a couple of the plates but the plates are good, printed on different paper and tipped in to the book. With each plate there are excellent instructions on how to execute the sketch from start to finish and there are also vignettes as chapter headpieces which on the contents page are also recommended to the reader can be reproduced as further sketching lessons. La fermeture de l'Académie des sciences par la Convention et le décret du 8 août 1793 feront de la Société philomathique de Paris la seule détentrice des publications scientifiques de l'époque jusqu'à la réouverture des académies, sous le nom d'Institut, le 3 brumaire an IV (novembre 1795), et la reprise de leurs publications. Les philomathes sont, en 1797, au nombre de soixante-dix : l'association est alors contrainte de ne plus élire de membre que par voie de remplacement et de limiter ce nombre à cinquante. From the foreword: "The library of Leander van Ess arrived in New York in 1838 and has since then reposed within the library of Union Theological Seminar…y, its incunabula known to students of the earliest printing but the rest of its contents essentially unknown. Few items from the collection have left the Seminary's buildings in the interim, and never has there been an effort to study and exhibit this "precious foundation" of the largest and most comprehensive theological library in the New World. In 1838, the purchase of this library in Germany by a new and impoverished Institution was audacious. As one looks back upon it, it was clearly also an event of importance in nineteenth-century cultural and educational history, it created one of the first research libraries in America - a phenomenon of greater importance than the fact that the library included (at the time) the largest collection of incunabula west of the Atlantic Ocean. The founding of Union's library also significantly fostered the German-American educational exchange that was the most important factor in the development of American universities in the second half of the century. These facts would have warranted an exhibition of books from the Library of Leander van Ess, but the research involved in the preparation of the exhibition has also revealed that the collection contains invaluable evidence for the history of books and libraries in Germany, and it demonstrates that the collector, Leander van Ess, was himself a figure of importance not only for biblical translation (for which he has chiefly been known) but also in the history of collecting and scholarship."
