Meade (1815-1872) was a career U.S. Army officer and a Union general during the Civil War. He is best-known for defeating and driving back Robert E. Lee's forces at the Battle of Gettysburg. Earlier in his career, Meade also worked as an engineer under the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers and helped build lighthouses in Delaware Bay, New Jersey, and the Florida Keys. The U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers was active from 1838-1863. The purpose of the organization was to establish coastal fortifications, map navigational routes, and construct federal civil works, such as lighthouses. The U.S. Lake Survey was established in 1841 and oversaw hydrographical surveys of northern and northwestern lakes in order to create navigational charts. The Survey's first charts were published in 1852.
