These circumstances are mentioned in hopes of obtaining the reader's consideration, as well as to account for the imperfections of the work, in connection with its title. About the Author:- John Forbes Royle (1798 1858), British botanist and teacher of materia medica, was born in Kanpur (then Cawnpore) in 1798. He was in charge of the botanical garden at Saharanpur and played a role in the development of economic botany in India. He was the only son of William Henry Royle and Isabella Forbes. While still a child, his father died and Royle studied under Sangster of Haddington before going to study at Edinburgh high school. He was influenced by Anthony Todd Thomson to take an interest in botany and natural history. In 1823 Royle was appointed as Superintendent of the botanical garden at Saharanpur which had been established by the East India Company in 1750 with the aim of promoting the introduction of new crops of commercial value. About The Author: John Forbes Royle (17981858), Born in Kanpur (then known as Cawnpore) in 1798, John Forbes Royle was a renowned British botanist and instructor of materia medica. He assumed the role of overseeing the botanical garden in Saharanpur, where he played a significant part in advancing the field of economic botany in India. In 1823, Royle was appointed as the Superintendent of the botanical garden in Saharanpur, a establishment that had been set up by the East India Company in 1750 to facilitate the introduction of commercially valuable crops. During his time there, Royle made notable contributions to botanical research and authored several influential books. These include "On the Antiquity of Hindu Medicine" (1837), "On the Culture and Commerce of Cotton in India and Elsewhere" (1851), "The Fibrous Plants of India Fitted for Cordage, Clothing, and Paper" (1855), and "Illustrations of the Botany and Other Branches of Natural History of the Himalayan Mountains and of the Flora of Cashmere" (1939). Royle's writings encompassed a wide range of topics related to India's productive resources. His research delved into the historical aspects of Hindu medicine, providing valuable insights into its ancient origins. Royle's exploration of the fibrous plants found in India yielded valuable information on their applicability in areas such as cordage, clothing, and paper production.
