Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive analysis of a religious controversy that has deeply affected the Society of Friends, also known as Quakers. The dispute centers on three fundamental doctrines: the divinity of Jesus Christ, the atonement, and the divine inspiration and inerrancy of the Holy Scriptures. The author examines the historical context of the controversy, tracing its origins to the early days of the Quaker movement. The book delves into the theological arguments presented by both sides, exploring the nuances of their beliefs and the impact of these doctrines on Quaker identity and practice. The author also considers the broader implications of the controversy for the understanding of Christianity and the nature of religious authority. Ultimately, this book offers a valuable contribution to the study of Quaker history and theology, providing a deeper understanding of the beliefs and practices that have shaped this religious community. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

First Edition. 8vo; vii, 167, 90 pages; Original owner's name on first blank "Edward Thorn's / Book" some faded pencil notes on ffep, scattered foxing; contents complete and secure in original binding of brown cloth spine over gray/tan boards, one inch tear to cloth at spine gutter on rear board; now in protective mylar cover. vii, (1), 167, (1), 90 Erratum slip tipped in at p. 16 A financial dispute over repayment of loans from the Friends treasurer Joseph Hendrickson at Crosswicks, New Jersey, and the reluctance of the borrower Thomas L. Shotwell to repay Hendrickson (treasurer appointed by Orthodox Friends), but rather wished to pay Stacy Decow who had lately been appointed Treasurer by the Hicksite faction, which now held forth in that community. Here the Decision came down in favor of the Orthodox Friends, as they were the originators of the loan. A very interesting exposition of the factions and their points of disagreement. Elias Hicks (1748-1830) of Long Island, New York, was a liberal Quaker preacher whose followers became known as Hicksites, one of two factions created by the schism of 1827â"28 in American Quakerism. Hicks was an avid abolitionist who further wanted to see a boycott of slave-produced goods, inspired the establishment of stores that sold only products produced by free labor. After assisting in ridding the Society of Friends (Quakers) of slavery, Hicks worked for general abolition. "The 'great separation' of 1827-28 began in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Approximately two-thirds of members ranged themselves in the group that came to be called âHicksite,â and emphasized the role of the Inward Light in guiding individual faith and conscience, while the remaining third, eventually known as âOrthodox,â espoused a more Protestant emphasis on Biblical authority and the atonement.".…
