Woodcut illustrations reproduced from the 1626 Compendium Maleficarum. A treatise on the prosecution of witches (or, at least, those accused o…f witchcraft), written by a German Catholic clergyman named Heinrich Kramer, but rejected by the clergy at the University of Cologne. The common English translation of the title is The Hammer of Witches. A posthumous author credit has been given to Jakob Sprenger, though there is cause to believe this is an erroneous attribution. Whatever the case, its publication exacerbated the proliferation of witch trials over the next two centuries, and its advocacy of torture and deception to obtain convictions in these trials is partly responsible for the frequently brutal nature of inquiries and punishments.

First edition. The Dominican inquisitor Heinrich Krämer, or Institoris, won lasting notoriety as the co-author of the witch-finder's handbook, Malleus maleficarum, an edition of which Koberger published only nine days before this treatise, which comprises 36 sermons preached by Krämer in Augsburg Cathedral. Krämer defended the r…ight of the faithful to worship hosts that had been miraculously preserved, in opposition to those such as Jean Gerson who warned against superstitious cults of dubious origin. "The treatise constituted a defence of the so-called wunderbarliches Gut (wondrous good), a miracle-working bleeding host in the Holy Cross church in Augsburg, which was claimed to have been miraculously preserved since its transformation in 1199 and had become the subject of episcopal enquiry and considerable controversy in the 1490s" (Zika). In Krämer's view, incorrupt or bleeding hosts confirmed the Real Presence, and his defence of their veneration was an indirect attack on those who doubted the reality or ubiquity of witchcraft. The Malleus Maleficarum was first printed by Peter Drach, and is dated to circa 1487 as some copies include a separately printed approbation dated 19 May 1487. A second edition was printed before August 1490. This is the third edition produced by Drach, and is dated conjecturally 1492 to 1495. Two editions were printed in 1494 (by Koberger in Nuremberg and Koelhoff in Cologne). The book was published and republished in at least 13 editions up to 1520, then revived from the late 16th century, undergoing at least 16 editions between 1574 and 1669, as well as numerous editions in German, French and English.
