Damon, Budel, 2014. VIII,115p. Paperback. 'Een handboek Latijn door niemand minder dan Augustinus (354-430)? Weinig lezers zullen weten dat een dergelijke tekst bestaat. Toch is dat zo: onder de werken op naam van Augustinus bevindt zich een kort traktaat over Latijnse grammatica. Inclusief rijtjes, indelingen en voorbeelden. En de gevreesde uitzonderingen natuurlijk. Dit leerboek of naslagwerkje gold lange tijd als onecht: men dacht dat het was samengesteld door een 7e eeuwse navolger. Maar recent is aangetoond dat het werk in hoofdzaak toch van Augustinus zelf is. Argumenten daarvoor zijn bijvoorbeeld een aantal ideeën over taal, parallellen met authentieke geschriften van Augustinus, en details en voorbeelden die stammen uit een Noord-Afrikaanse context. (. ) Veel andere voorbeeldige woorden en zinnen roepen een sfeer op van school, retoriek, gemeenschapsleven en christelijke waarden. Dat is natuurlijk geen definitief bewijs, maar alles bij elkaar is het overtuigend. Anderzijds is het ook duidelijk dat de tekst is ingekort op een aantal onderdelen. De hoofdstukken over zelfstandige naamwoorden en werkwoorden lijken nogal uitgebreid. Maar andere secties, zoals die over bijwoorden, deelwoorden, voegwoorden en tussenwerpsels zijn zo kort dat ze zo nauwelijks van Augustinus kunnen zijn. Kortom, het gaat om een deels ingekorte versie van een authentieke, vroege tekst van Augustinus. Augustinus schreef zijn Latijnse grammatica in de jaren voor zijn doop in Milaan (387), als onderdeel van een ambitieus werk over elementaire vakken (disciplinae) dat hij wilde samenstellen. Het project bleef onvoltooid: alleen een boek Over muziek en het boek over grammatica zijn feitelijk geschreven. Het grammaticaboek is bedoeld als een stevige basis, een opstapje voor spirituele studies. Echt geestelijke zaken zijn hier dan ook grotendeels afwezig, met uitzondering van algemeen christelijke ideeën zoals in zinnen als propter salutem 'omwille van het heil'(c.94) of voorbeelden die verwijzen naar drie bisschoppen (c.7). De kerkvader schrijft voor een publiek van lokale Latijn-gebruikers, voor wie de taal niet de moedertaal is. Zeg maar als een soort eerste hulp en naslagwerk voor Afrikaanse Latijn-schrijvers, misschien als schoolmeesters en kerkelijke functionarissen. Wat iedereen uit de praktijk al weet (zoals de functie van de conjunctief) blijft onbesproken, terwijl de aandacht uitgaat naar theoretische problemen, vreemde uitzonderingen of onlogische elementen in het systeem. Sympathiek is dat Augustinus steeds pleit voor traditie en goed gebruik, meer dan voor strikte toepassing van regeltjes. En steeds wil hij mooie voorbeelden geven. Zo zijn de paradigmata vooral woorden als virtus 'deugd', oboedire 'gehoorzamen', en bovenal, scribere 'schrijven'. Het is misschien geen toeval dat hij juist daarmee alle vormen van het Latijnse werkwoord uitschrijft. Voor lezers die geïnteresseerd zijn in de Latijnse grammatica is het aardig om te zoeken naar kleine en grote verschillen tussen Augustinus' systeem en grammaticale beschrijvingen uit hedendaagse leerboeken. Veel rijtjes, voorbeelden en onderverdelingen lijken vertrouwd, maar er zijn ook opmerkelijke verschillen. (.) Ook deze tekst tekent Augustinus' zorg voor de taal, zijn aandacht voor communicatie en zijn scherpe, analytische geest. Er zijn antieke leerboeken die minder te bieden hebben.
