The present study, documented by both visual and written records, including memories, reveals not only the ways in which Istanbul was perceived and portrayed by European artists in the nineteenth century, but it also tries to represent the contemporary city as it truly lived and breathed. In the present work, the reader will discover the identity of Western artists whose works pictorially limned the Ottoman capital, their favorite subjects ¿the harem, the bath, the coffeehouse, and the slave market- and the nature of their interpretation of these subjects.

Bu terim, 19. yuzyilin ortasinda Dogu dunyasini konu alan bir resim turu icin de kullanilmaya baslanmistir. O zamandan beri Oryantalizm, bugunku Turkiye, Yunanistan, Yakin Dogu ve Kuzey Afrika topraklarini kapsayan ve Batililarin Islam Dunyasi karsisindaki tavirlarini tanimlayan genel bir terim olarak benimsenmistir. Dogu'ya duyulan ilgi, 19. yuzyildan cok once baslamistir. Daha Romalilar doneminde Misir ve Iran kulturlerinin Italya'ya girisi, Bati'nin Dogu'ya olan ilgisini ortaya koymustur. Ortacagda, Haclilar Yakindogu'yu Avrupa'ya bir olcude tanitmislardir. Hiristiyan dininin Yakindogu'da ortaya cikmis olmasi Batililarin bu ulkelerle ilgilenmelerinin baslica nedenlerinden biridir. Ancak bu caglarin resim sanati ornekleri, Dogu'nun gercek bir goruntusunu yansitmaktan uzaktir. Oryantalist resimlerde sik rastlanan dogulu figurler ve aksesuarlar Ronesans doneminde artmistir. Bunlar cogunlukla Avrupa manzaralari onune yerlestirilmis sarikli, dogu kilikli figurlerin basmakalip resimleriydi. Burada baslica amac, egzotik bir etki yaratmak oldugundan, dogulu tipleri dogru olarak gosterme yonunde ressamlarin herhangi bir cabasi olmamistir. Turklerin, Iranlilarin, Tatarlarin ve Memluklarin kiyafetlerinden motifler aliniyor ve bunlar rastgele bir bicimde birlestiriliyordu. Bu tur derlemeler Gentile Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, Fra Angelico, Filippino Lippi, Bernardino Pinturrichio, Tiepolo gibi sanatcilarin resimlerinde goruluyordu. Ronesans sonrasinda kisa surede tum Avrupa'ya yayilan dogu modasi; giyim kusami, mimarligi ve sanat yapitlarini etkilemistir. Bunun resim alanindaki en onemli temsilcisi Rembrandt'dir. Kutsal Kitap oykulerini ele aldigi resimlerine tarihsel bir yerellik katmak icin oryantal ogelerden yararlanan sanatci, Mogol minyaturlerini kopya ediyor, Turk silahlari ve Iran kumaslari topluyordu. 18. yuzyilda Avrupa'da Ortadogu ve Uzakdogu'ya karsi yeni bir ilgi baslamistir. Diplomatik, kulturel, askeri ve ticari iliskiler bir yandan cagin Bati kulturunu bu ulkelere tanitirken, ote yandan Dogu'ya ait kulturel ogeler yuzyilin sonlarina dogru Avrupalilar tarafindan benimsenmis, Chinoiserie ve Turquerie basliklari altinda tanimlanan bir dogu egzotizmine yol acmistir. 19. yuzyila gelindiginde dogu konulu resimlerin niteligi buyuk olcude degisir. Bunun cesitli nedenleri vardir. Napolyon'un Misir Seferi'nden baslayarak Yunan Bagimsizlik Savasi, Cezayir'in Fransizlar tarafindan alinmasi, Kirim Savasi gibi siyasi olaylar, Suveys Kanali'nin acilmasi, Oryantal arastirma okullarinin kurulmasi, seyahat kosullarinin duzelmesi, cesitli uluslararasi sergilerde Islam Kulturu'nun tanitilmasi Dogu'ya karsi bilim, tarih ve sanat alanina duyulan ilgiyi artirmistir. Sonuc olarak, dogruluga pek onem vermeyen ve dogu uslûplarinin bir derlemesi olmaktan pek de oteye gitmeyen egzotizm, 19. yuzyilda yerini daha gercekci ve ciddi bir anlayisin egemen oldugu Oryantalizm'e birakmistir. 1798'de Napolyon'un Misir Seferi'yle baslayan ve 1914'de I. Dunya Savasi'yla son bulan Oryantalist resim akimi, belirli bir okul ya da uslup degildir. Oryantalist resimlerin ortak yani, isledikleri konulardir. Nitekim biri Neoklasik, digeri Romantik akimin en onemli temsilcilerinden olan Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres ve Eugene Delacroix ayni derecede basarili Oryantalist tablolar yapmislardir. Ote yandan, Oryantalist ressamlarin buyuk bir bolumu sadece Dogu ile ilgili konularda degil, baska konularda da resim yapmislardir. Oryantalist resimlerin Dogu'nun atmosferinden kaynaklanan bir ortak yani vardir: isik daima sicak.
