The comparatively long stretch of time covered; the lack of resident embassies and consequently the occasional character and sometimes widely spaced intervals of the diplomatic missions; the absence of dispatches for 1450 as well as for the three years, March of 1457 to February of 1460; the complex and shifting political situations both in France and Italythese elements combined seem to the editors to dictate an historical survey of a most general kind as setting for the papers encompassed in Volume One. At the same time the factlikewise uncharacteristic of succeeding volumesthat while most of the documents here set forth have not been hitherto published, and few have appeared in complete or in impeccable texts, the diligent researches in Italian and French archives of Beaucourt, Perret, Desjardins, and the editor of the letters of the Dauphin Louis, years ago made available in their respective publications much of the information necessary for such a summary historical introduction as ours and for brief explanatory notes to the documents themselves. and resources for the period, along with complementary books and articles on specialized subjects, have been but sparingly indicated. For the convenience of the reader, therefore, we have appended to this introduction a brief bibliography of printed source materials and scholarly works which are useful for exploring in greater detail the Franco- Milanese relations depicted in our documents.
