Neuwertiges, sehr sauberes Exemplar. - Kaiser Theodosius I. zählt zu den herausragenden Gestalten des spätrömischen Reiches. Er war der letzte Kaiser, der für wenige Jahre allein über das gesamte Imperium herrschte (392-395). In seine Amtszeit, die von 379 bis 395 dauerte, fiel die Einführung des Christentums als Staatsreligion, die er mit seinem Edikt vom 28. Februar 380 besiegelte, in dem er allen Untertanen ein verbindliches Glaubensbekenntnis vorschrieb. Ein Jahr später fand in Konstantinopel das Zweite Ökumenische Konzil statt, das des Kaisers Entscheidungen im Wesentlichen bestätigte. Nach dem Konzil erließ Theodosius I. zahlreiche Gesetze gegen Häretiker, aber erst gegen Ende seiner Amtszeit ein Verbot heidnischer Kulte. Zu Theodosius bedeutsamen Leistungen zählt auch der Friedensschluss mit den Goten (382), die als Verbündete auf dem Territorium des Reiches angesiedelt wurden und sich zur Heerfolge verpflichteten. Bereits Mitte des 5. Jahrhunderts wurde Theodosius von kirchlichen Kreisen mit dem Attribut der Große geschmückt. Die Monographie von Albert Güldenpenning und Julius Ifland zählt noch heute zu den Grundlagenwerken der Altertumswissenschaft, nicht zuletzt, weil sie in gebotener Ausführlichkeit die heidnischen und christlichen Quellen offenlegt, aus denen die Theodosius-Forschung bis heute schöpft.
