Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. An extensive run of the classic California punk fanzine, 117 issues (of 122 total), plus the rare 1979 pictorial Calendar. All issues present except nos. 1, 3, 9, 11, and 12. Flexi disc in #84 and #86, but no flexi disc in #83. Stapled wraps in various formats. Very Good+ condition overall (most issues better shap…e than that) with occasional wear along edges and staples, dampstaining (most acute in nos. 20, 45, 72, 116, and 117), old price stickers on front wraps, occasional mailing labels, light wear. From its origins in the early L.A. punk scene, featuring such local bands as The Runaways, Weirdos, and Germs-- hating on disco, which was all the rage then-- to the 1980s when punk fractured into a number of subcultures including hardcore and "college rock" (later to be known as indie in the '90s), to the early aughts when it met its demise, Flipside chronicled it all-- with less pretentiousness than many of their competitors. They covered local scenes, other 'zines, and cultural trends; reviewed many albums; interviewed bands; featured comics like John Crawford's "Baboon Dooley"; and even covered some politics here and there-- often of the fringe variety, such as their four-part interview with UFO/conspiracy author William Cooper. While Flipside spotlighted all manner of successful bands in its day, it's the utterly forgotten groups and never-weres that fascinate this cataloguer, destined-for-obscurity acts like Slug, Clowns for Progress, Bark Market, Shoeface, Vermin from Mars, Buck Pets, The Motorcyle Boy, and local band Butt Trumpet. (Whom amongst you still yearns for the heyday of Butt Trumpet?) The magazine's existence (1977-2002) spanned a very vibrant time in rock music culture, which it has preserved for future generations admirably.
